EMI recalls DRM-encumbered CD
Over enthusiastic

EMI has recalled a best-selling CD after it was inadvertently encumbered with over-zealous DRM. And Sony has recalled a web posting by one of the bands advising fans how to unbork the borked disc.

Switchfoot's CD debuted at No.3 on the Billboard chart last week, but DRM prevented fans burning backups - or making copies of any kind as they soon discovered.

A member of the band, Tim Foreman, professed himself "horrified" and advised fans how to work around the DRM. The board is hosted by Sony Music, which has since deleted the post.

Now EMI says it's removing the settings, which it says were put in place accidentally, and is offering an exchange. Fans can swap a version of the CD that doesn't allow any copies to be made for one that permits three burns - as the record company intended.

The publicity backlash hasn't done the the Christian rockers any harm.

"Thats some major advertising these websites are doing for SF! God is rewarding Timmy's concern for his fans," hoped one fan.

There's no one better placed to advise fans on the perils of DRM than the artists themselves. ®

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, here's the deal...we know the major labels are lying through the holes in their teeth when they say it puts in DRM on any CD "accidentally." Now, if they said "intentionally," as we know they do, then I'd be more inclined to believe it.

But come on. This is the RIAA-backed goon squad we're talking about here. They wouldn't know the truth if it came up alongside them and smacked them in the face.

And another thing...doesn't EMI realize how useless DRM actually is? Guess not.

i think it's really funny that these people on the website are talking about moving music to their IPOD.. and emi is recalling them to give them the same crippled thing.. except this time the illegal (yes, illegal under hacking laws and the spyware laws) malware it installs allows you to make a copy of the disk 3 times...

It still doesn't let you turn it into an ipod friendly format!

How I use a CD (simular for DVDs):
Buy it
Copy it to my hard drive as mp3s
Store the CD where my 5yr old son can't find it.
Play music in Winamp.
No illegal filesharing, No illegal CD copies to lil hotties, No problems...
But if I can not copy it, I can not listen to it, so I wont buy it to begin with.
I keep getting the impression that some of the free programs that come with cams and other hardware are written by people who dont really use the product, kinda like how many women have complained that bras are designed by men, lol. I really think the RIAA backed music industry doesnt listen to to music nor are they music lovers...

Lol, they are designed by men...evil men. And no, they aren't music lovers. They're money lovers. :) (Smile)

how i use a cd...

pull it out of a dusty cover..
take it to the back yard..
sneer at the fact that it says "and justice for all"
use it for pellet gun practice until it falls apart.
get next cd out of the unused tower of them.

speaking of that.. there's a house in our area of town where an artist lives.

every christmas season this artist decorates her trees with RIAA cds.. ironically the only use left for them.

And if I can't rip it, master it, put it in MP3 format, and put it in the Sims 2 game, than, errr, Error Message: Unacceptable security measure. I will simply not buy it.

And another news. Somebody may allready found a crack for all the three-prong Blue-Ray. It's the DeAACSromD. It breaks the AACS system, and it installs a bypass that ignores the ROM disk. Furthermore, it's encrypted, so that the BD+ can't reactivate the code. So, the Blu-ray protection scheme is yet another failure.

Darn...

Give up on the DRM "solution" JDon. It doesn't exist, and we wouldn't want it even if it could.

Fair and equitable copyright laws (which we no longer have) are ENOUGH of a "protection" to give to the creators even in this digital age.

i googled that term and got nada.. what manner of fabrication is this?

Awehr is right.

Your search - DeAACSromD - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:
- Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
- Try different keywords.

so what's that all about?

Oh, and DRM is crap - and so is the DMCA.
- Try more general keywords.

(RaidHHI may blast me for posting it but...)

Here's something about it from the INBOX:

========

"You had previously featured a Switchfoot article on your site
about Tim Foreman's response to Sony-BMG's
copy-protection. Well, there is now more to the
story. Take a look:

http://www.billboardradiomonitor.com/radiomonitor/search/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001218326

In case you are unaware, Switchfoot uses two labels for distribution, EMI for the Christian market, and Sony-BMG for the secular and world markets. Now, it seems that EMI has recalled its version because there was an "error" on the copy-protection (not allowing the limited copying as was advertised), and the "new and improved" copy-protected version has been reissued. Just thought you may like to know. You can also read the post about this on the message board here:

http://forums1.sonymusic.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/716102313/m/3611066374

I thought you might be interested in this update.

All the best,

Switchfoot who?
DMembergrumpygeezer

That's meant as sarcasm, right?
(Because if you read the above article, you already know who they are.)

I guess we could agree that they don't deserve our attention because they aren't independent artists?
