Book Review : The Self-Promoting Musician
Posted by ElectronicVan in on August 9, 2005 at 3:26 PM

The Self-Promoting Musician by Peter Spellman is geared for independent musicians seeking to do a better job of getting their material making money for them.

This book really shines with the business advice offered. In particular, Chapter 2 describes the process of writting your own business plan. A study on goal setting by the Ford Foundation found that a top 3% of those polled achieved their goals 89% of the time - the difference between that 3% and the rest - they physically wrote their goals down!

The one area that the book lacked and I wish no books would include sections on this, was listing music websites where to submit and promote your band. Number one, they didn't mention DMusic! Number two, IMHO, this really should be avoided, as the average lifespan of most indie music sites (DM aside) is equivalent to that of a housefly.

All in all, Chapter 2 is worth the price of the book alone, along with the information on press kits and radio submission it's a good buy.
