The move, HMV says, is a protest against a deal struck between coffee giant Starbucks and Morissette's label, Maverick Records. Under the terms of their agreement, Morissette's latest effort -- an acoustic re-release of her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill -- will be sold exclusively at Starbucks.
The deal lasts for six weeks, after which music lovers would be able to find the CD at traditional music retailers.
According to HMV president Humphrey Kadaner, however, that's not good enough.
"As of June 13, HMV will be removing all Alanis products from our stores, consistent with the views of the majority of our customers, and will be returning all Alanis product to the record company,'' he wrote in an e-mail Thursday.
This is not the first time traditional music sellers have gotten upset over en exclusive retail arrangement. Less than two years ago, HMV, Music World and Sunrise Records all pulled Rolling Stones albums from their shelves.
That move was a protest of the aging rockers' deal to sell their Four Flicks DVD through Best Buy and Future Shop.
Freshly-inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame, Morissette is now celebrating the 10th anniversary of her breakout album with the new CD and an acoustic tour.

the new cd is an acoustic remake of the same thing she did 10 years ago. we used to call these "one hit wonders" I can't feel bad for her since if I remember right, the anticrist (madonna) has a lot to do with maverick records and at minimum it's a riaa label. hopefully they'll lose money on the deal.

Alanis Morissette? The same person from You Can't Do That on Television in the 1980s? Wow...

Aw, it's too bad she's gone to recycling her own stuff, Jagged was an ok album, but I thought she was actually growing a little as an artist by the time she got to "Hands Clean". I'm personally of the opine that Alanis should ditch her lable and start an indie lable of her own, I think she's got growth in her that her lable might be holding back. And also, I miss her music heartily and I'd like to go back to buying it.

I dislike Alanis with a vengeance. Hybrid di a remix of one of her tracks and it was on white label 12" vinyl. But when Hybrid's label Distinctive Records tried to release it officially they were denied it by Alanis' label. Instead Hybrid released a cut of the same mix without her vocals on a remix compilation album of theirs and called it 'Jaded little pill'. I think that was a dig at Alanis and her label

I would imagine the reason Alanis did an exclusive deal with a coffee shop chain is that her label wasn't gonna push it as much as they wanted and because she is still enslaved under contract that was the best option they had to get maximum sales. (Even tho "Jagged" sold umpteen millions of copies, I suspect she STILL owes the labels on all the advances.)
Alanis, you reading this? Did I guess near correctly?

(You all know DAMN WELL they don't want a know artist out operating independently. Safer to keep her in the coffee can!)

"As of June 13, HMV will be removing all Alanis products from our stores, consistent with the views of the majority of our customers..."
...but they'll put them back eventually, apparently against the views of the majority of their customers.

I'm reading and I'm sorry but you're not close to correct. First, To think that Alanis did not recoup is crazy. Second, these Starbucks releases have been great promotion for artists who fit the profile. This is perfect for Alanis - the people who will buy this slop are the same folks who buy a couple of cd's a year, but often go to Starbucks for their daily coffee. Alanis is sitting right there on the counter and boom - sale! You are correct in that the label thinks this is the way to get maximum sales - that is obviously why they are doing it.

Alanis couldn't possibly find a worse corporation to partner with, how stupid.

Unfortunately, mroop is right. Alanis + Starbucks will probably result in a ton of sales.
(It is all yet ANOTHER example of the reasons we must re-double our efforts to educate the sheep that there is something else "out there" in the music marketplace than the RIAA "hasbeens"
"isbeens" ...and God prevent, the "wannabe's")
