In The News - Edition 12.5
Posted by OtherMike (Shmoo) in on April 16, 2005 at 8:26 PM

html and other code works in these hollowed threads. My favorite hypertext linking trick is as follows:

[url= http://link ]Headline[ /url]

(just remove the spaces and insert the article's url and headline where appropriate to create a clickable link.)

Don't forget to include a brief comment if so desired.

And now, todays news and errata:

Here's one fresh of the Plate, uhm Press...

As the RIAA and their Counterparts continue to Terrorize those who share (Advertise) their Compressed & Filtered Data...

***Woman sues ISP for grassing her up to RIAA***

A WOMAN who was grassed up to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) by her ISP is taking the snitches to court.

Dawnell Leadbetter, from somewhere near Seattle, claims her ISP, Comcast, was not authorised to hand over her details to snoops from the RIAA who were seeking victims to stiff with big bills for sharing tunes online.

Leadbetter, a mother (sniff), was contacted by some heavies on behalf of the RIAA, who demanded $4,500 and threatened court action if she didn't hand over the dosh. They said she'd have to fork out far more if she was convicted of infringing copyright legislation.

The heavies, from a debt-collection agency named the Settlement Support Center in Washington DC, had tracked the woman down using information the RIAA had extracted from Comcast.

Leadbetter's lawyer says Comcast had no court authorisation to dish the dirt on her to a third party. "Comcast should respect the rights of privacy who pay them monthly bills," lawyer Lory Lybeck asserted.

Comcast is keeping schtumm on the move, while it seeks legal counsel.

THE ANTI-FBI FBI WARNING:

I'm not a big fan of Elvis Costello, but any husband of Diana Krall is all right by me. I think he wrote some clever songs back in the day.

I saw his new album, Delivery Man, at the library, and picked it up out of curiosity. I had seen him perform his new song Monkey to Man on Conan O'Brian, thought it was a good rocker, so I thought I would give the CD a spin.

On the back of the CD is the FBI logo and the "FBI Anti-Piracy Warning: blah blah blah." But ABOVE the FBI logo is this line, in all caps:

"THIS ARTIST DOES NOT ENDORSE THE FOLLOWING WARNING. THE F.B.I. DOESN'T HAVE HIS HOME PHONE NUMBER AND HE HOPES THEY DON'T HAVE YOURS."

Costello may still be an RIAA slave, but that was a pretty cool move. Thumbs up, Elvis.

These two pages detail some "effective" but methinks illegal methods of blocking p2p distribution. I'm sure it stems from the breaking of sha1 hashing, but am interested in how it actaully works.

Interesting notes: it claims to destroy already whole files in the network.. well read the comments they pretty much sum it up.

Here's one from the BBC concerning US box office for movies.

"...it was a disappointing weekend for the industry in general with sales down for the seventh week in a row, and down 13% on the same weekend last year.

"'This is a major slump,' said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Exhibitor Relations."

-----
Sounds like the slump started at exactly the same time the MPAA lawsuits were announced.

I also received a letter from ASCAP today, noting that 2004 was its 91st year (they've been around longer then the RIAA), as well as the largest distribution total ever (money paid out to songwriters/publishers as royalties from airplay, etc.).

Because p2p has NO EFFECT on songwriting royalties.

Thanks for the link on the movie industry, George. Isn't it amusing that the top movie is a remake? No new ideas...
The mission here on this site is to boycott - not purchase products from the RIAA. From time to time, some posters have suggested some pretty radical (extreme) methods for getting the attention of the beast and the media.
I read this article this morning about a very intelligent young man who believed that the end justified the means. Any thoughts?

"Calif. student gets 8 years for SUV vandalism
Sentenced for 2003 spree that torched Hummers, other gas guzzlers

Updated: 9:45 p.m. ET April 18, 2005LOS ANGELES - An aspiring physicist was sentenced to more than eight years in prison on Monday and ordered to pay $3.5 million for his role in a spree of arson and vandalism that targeted gas-guzzling Hummers and other sports utility vehicles.

APR 13, 2005

Rejecting pleas for clemency from William Cottrell, a 24-year-old doctoral candidate in physics at the California Institute of Technology, U.S. District Judge Gary Klausner added more time to the sentence after finding that Cottrell was trying to sway consumers with his anti-SUV message.

The slogans Cottrell spray-painted onto vehicles included “Fat Lazy Americans,” “No Respect for Earth” and “SUV = Terrorism.”

Cottrell, who admitted only spray-painting and testified he did not know that two friends were bringing Molotov cocktails, promised he would never break the law again. The two friends have fled the country to avoid prosecution, authorities said.

“I want nothing more than to be a physicist,” Cottrell said. “I would do anything to earn any leniency the court could show in this matter.”

Cottrell was convicted last November on seven counts of arson and one count of conspiracy related to a 2003 vandalism and firebombing spree that targeted about 125 large sports utility vehicles at four Southern California dealerships and a few homes.

Lawyers mount autism defense
Cottrell’s attorneys asked for the five-year mandatory minimum sentence saying that their client has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism marked by impaired ability to understand social situations.

They said it affected his judgment and kept him from backing out when his two friends started lighting Molotov cocktails.

But Judge Klausner said high intelligence should work against a defendant, not in his favor. “What a talent to have wasted,” Klausner said. “There’s only one person to blame for that, and I’m sure Mr. Cottrell understands that it’s him.”

Attorneys estimated that Cottrell, who had faced a mandatory minimum sentence of five years, could spend six years in jail, including credit for time served.

“The defendant engaged in conduct to send a political message,” said federal prosecutor Beverly Reid O’Connell. “He’s a scheming, arrogant person who is disdainful of the law and the justice system.”

From George's post.."In the coming weeks the big releases will include Nicole Kidman's The Interpreter, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the final instalment of Star Wars on 19 May"

Now here's the kicker, if no one bothes to go see Star Wars..then we'll know for sure filesharing is to blame...right??? Lets keep our sights set on this one.

autodidact,

In addition to being an RIAA slave, Elvis Costello is a racist. Or at least he was.

Maybe he changed, but in 1979, Bonnie Bramlett (of Delaney and Bonnie) punched Costello in a Columbus, Ohio bar for calling Ray Charles a "blind, ignorant nigger."
