Yesterday, artists found themselves divided on the issue of satellite radio in Canada--since some of them are also songwriters.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is holding hearings to decide whether to issue licenses for satellite radio. Testimony came from artists, songwriters, independent producers, and of course, major record companies.
According to the article, independent musicians blasted the industry groups, but found themselves in a peculiar situation. "They are more concerned about Canadian content, but they are not the person down there in the kitchen trying to earn a living," said Ajax, Ont., musician Rob McArthurn. "I was very disappointed to hear some of the comments from these groups -- some of which I am a member."

satellite radio is expensive. I simply refuse to buy in. when last i checked it was $100 a month, which is $85 a month more than i'm willing to pay for radio which i (may) listen to every once in a while in my car.
After all, that's what my itrip and transpod are for.

it was an older figure from much earlier in the technology's history(any technology is 10 times as expensive when new).
10 a month isnt bad but the receivers are still pricey.

Just get a good quality/high capacity mp3 player and no need for the radio or monthly fees and you always hear what you like.

How exactly do you discover new music? I love satellite radio and would never get rid of it. Just getting rid of the commercials is enough for me to pay the 12 bucks a month. Plus the DJ's(on Sirius at least) arn't over exerting morons that talk too damn loud and have nothing good to say. They usually have lots of interesting info about the bands and upcoming shows and music.

"dave109100 How exactly do you discover new music"
It's called the internet and word of mouth.
I have a friend that loves his Satellite radio and while it was a nifty looking device when I turned it on it was just like "normal radio" only more channels of the same major label crap.
Music information about upcoming shows, albums most bands have mailing lists with that info which I get conveniently in my email box.

dave109100. For starters go to dmusic.com or garageband.com or iuma.com or about a dozen other great places.

I already do. I have bought albums from cd baby! And yes! I heard 1 band from dmusic on Sirius and proceeded to buy the album. Another I heard on sirius and got the album from cd baby.

Maybe XM and some channels on Sirius, but I hear new Indie rock every week which is much more select. Unless you'd rather just sift through hundreds of submissions yourself. Sorry, don't have the time.

I gotcha dave, kinda figured you did go to the indie sites already (wasn't putting YOU down per se, these threads are read by a LOT of hopefully impressionable folks who never post and was just using your comment to futher our agenda... I promise it was NOT an attack at you
Yes, it is true that some indie music is leaking to the satellite radio services... (not enough, but some.) But the big money corporates (RIAA and friends) still control them ...and thus the content.

DESPITE the recent elections and all the partisan hubaloo that our members (self- included) perhaps wrongfully had let ourselves get side-tracked by, the PRIME mission here at Boycott-Riaa is still to destroy the "old" music model and bring about the "new."

That's sad Ronnie you might have 1000's of fans driving around listening to your music and wondering...who is this? I am going to buy their cds.

I doubt you got played much (if any) on the 1 "indie" station out of (300+?) they have... If you DID get any significant airplay, the RIAA would already have owned you.
