Michael Powell appeared on Ronn Owens' KGO Radio show in San Francisco and Howard Stern called in to give him a proper piece of his mind. Stories here, here, and here.

Stern went after Powell for getting his job because of his father. Powell whined "unfair." Stern said, no, it's fair and relevant because broadcasters who've devoted their lives to this industry now answer to this First Amendment hypocrite.

Stern pushed Powell on fining him and Viacom over Jackson but not fining Oprah Winfrey because she's beloved. Powell denied saying that (his aid did say it) and said the Winfrey case is still open.

Stern called the fines and the FCC's holding station renewals hostage "racketeering."

Stern to Powell:
The first question being: How did you get your job? It is apparent to most of us in broadcasting that your father got you your job. And you kind of sit there:

You're the judge, you're the arbiter, you're the one who tells us what we can and can't say on the air and yet I really don't think you're qualified to be the head of the commission. Do you deny that your father got you this job?

Powell was of course nominated by Clinton. But he assumed Chairmanship under Bush, and Stern rightly ridicules his credentials.

However, at the time of the consolidation hearings, Powell had no interest in censorship issues. "Apparently my colleagues haven't heard of a little thing called the First Amendment," was his quote at the time.

The phony public outrage over Nipplegate, etc. has been drummed up by Democratic FCC Commissioner Michael Copps. Powell is only a latecomer to the party. It's pretty funny that Powell takes the heat from Stern. It's not even his favorite issue.

Copps and Adelstein would be heroes for their champion task of halting the network consolidation. But they blew it. The Copps/Adelstein Censorship campaign resembles Bush's cut 'n run in Afghanistan; the censorhip flapdoodle is a weakness and a diversion.

If I were a parent, i'd rather Sting get fined for his "fucking brilliant" comment and Oprah for her sexually explicit ratings stunt than Janet's accidentally exposed nipple. But maunfactured outrage could only stick to Janet. And that episode leaves me wondering why parents won't use the V-chip.

Quietguy, I will explain why more parents are using V-Chips. Because there are a lot of men and woman who have children but aren't parents. Instead they have other things in their lives that are more important then raising their kids. Let TV and the media raise their kids. I mean, why should having kids get in the way of my social life.

-This isn't meant for every parent, just those who don't feel the need to raise their children or pay any attention to them.-

Most parents don't have the intellegence to use a v chip. Using one usually requires thast you read the fucking manual.

"The communications industry spent $704,000 on 450 trips for lawmakers on two congressional oversight committees, their families and staff members in the past four years, a watchdog group reported."
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates the communications industry. "Billy Tauzin (R-La), a former chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, took 87 industry-funded trips to Las Vegas, San Diego, New York and elsewhere, at a cost of $139,000".

"The report found that the communications industry, defined as broadcasting, cable and telecommunications, has spent $1.1 billion on lobbying and campaign contributions since 1998.

Over that same period of time, the industry favored George W. Bush with a total of $1.8 million in campaign contributions. Democrat John Kerry received $1.1 million.

Former Bell telephone company SBC Communications was the biggest donor to Bush, giving $178,000 in contributions. Kerry's top communications donor was Time Warner, with $242,000 worth of donations, according to the report."

Regarding the V-Chip. If your kids are to watch TV, watch it with them. If something comes up, discuss it with them. I have a 3 1/2 yo son, and although he is not 14 and trying for independance, I feel parents should give more attention. I know I have a long road ahead, but, I lok forward to educating, not cencoring (within reason)

As for Howard... good for him. I am not fully educated on all happenings... but, when I have listened to his show, his stuff is funny. Just like Mancow (out of Chicago). The thing about all this, almost each and everyone of us (in America) talks as dirty as the radio hosts.

I agree, these two guys have been OUR side on certain issues, but then they went insane and started up with the censorshit. I feel betrayed.

Stern was just being media savvy and self-serving (of course,) and knows that Michael Powel is a bigger known target to pick on than Copps or Adelstein or any of the other 2 at the FCC. But I will applaud him because for the moment his issue is in league with our own issues and the FCC needs smacked down often.
