Well, it sure did sound like they were playing the wrong song. Wonder if she did her second song like acts on SNL normally do.
Still, maybe in the future, SNL will actually get a real act instead of an abortive clone of another act.

You know, I saw just a bit of SNL last night and I never saw this Simpson girl before, though of course, I had heard of her.
I sat there wondering why in the hell this girl is "famous".
I mean, Britney may not be the most talented, but at least she's attractive.
Honest to Gosh, I kept sitting there thinking she would have back up singers that looked like flying monkeys or that she would burst forth with "I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog too!"....or that they would bring out one of those wide brimmed pointy hats, or that Margaret Hamilton would magically appear floating behind her smiling....
If this is the best the RIAA has to offer....independent artists have zero competition...and yeah, those high water pants made her hips look gargantuan.
Other than the fact that she can't sing her way out of a paper bag and the song was horrible...
it was just great

I saw the opening, but not Simpson's "performance." Implying Ashlee is not attractive? She looked pretty darn attractive when she was a regular on WB's Seventh Heaven. (Unless boob size is the arbiter of attractiveness.)
But yeah, I'd rather see an ugly girl play real music. Or an indie treasure like Jill Sobule, or Dominique Durand with Ivy, or... almost anything. Even Charlotte Church or Josh Groban.
SNL used to spotlight artists like Leon Redbone -- never exactly Mr. Hip even in the 70s. Bruce Cockburn. Rickie Lee Jones. Even the Stones, back when they were relevant. To think of "lip sync" and Mick Jagger in the same sentence gives me the giggles.
How the mighty have fallen.

"NEW YORK (AP) - Singer Ashlee Simpson's "extra help" may have been exposed when a "Saturday Night Live" audience heard her voice, singing the wrong song, while she held a microphone at her waist.
Her record company blamed a computer glitch and she blamed her band for Sunday morning's incident, which cut off her planned performance of the song "Autobiography" on the network comedy show.
Simpson had performed her hit single "Pieces of Me" without incident earlier in the show. When she came back a second time, her band started playing and the first lines of her singing "Pieces of Me" could be heard again.
She looked momentarily confused as the band plowed ahead with the song and the vocal was quickly silenced.
Simpson made some exaggerated hopping dance moves, then walked off the stage 35 seconds into the performance. NBC quickly cut to a commercial.
"What can I say?" guest host Jude Law said with Simpson standing next to him at the end of the show. "Live TV."
"Exactly," Simpson said. "I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong song. I didn't know what to do so I thought I'd do a hoe-down."

I could tell she was lip syncing the FIRST song she "sang". You can't really call it singing and LIVE when you don't do either, can you?
To me, this represents a NEW LOW for Saturday Night Live. I think they should be required to remove the word "LIVE" from their title if they are going to continue to let music acts lip sync. What a joke. "The band started playing the wrong song?" Gimme a break.

After viewing the clip (several times) I couldnt help but feel bad for her at first but her behavior through it all was more appalling.
As a musician, you do NOT disrespect your audience nor your band members by WALKING OFF THE STAGE. And you certainly do NOT blame the band because she was unprepared to handle any given moment during a performance. That's what wrong with today's concerts..too much dependency on your ProTools rigs.
My guitar strings popped on several occasion during a performance and like an idiot..didnt have spare set of strings on me so I just worked with the crowd and did an a cappella and moved on...and it was greater set because the crowd energy was with me.
She embarassed me as an artist but all..she is just a kid.

I was crooning through this Ashley chick's official web site to come across some pretty heated messages. They're priceless. Amongst the immature frenzy of vicious cussings..there were three that actually stood out worth saving before their admin deleted them all but one eloquent mature post from a musician got my attention. Perhaps something good for the music world will come out of Ms Simpson's accident.

Dear Ashley,
I was a fan of yours. Yes, I bought your CD. I feel cheated and taken advantage of.
I feel as though you do not care about your fans whatsoever.
How dare you post that your career won't stop and that you have many "important"
people behind you. Your fans are the most important and honestly...
I feel ashamed and disgraced that I even bought your CD.
I feel as though I should get my money back and then throw out this piece of garbage.
If I was given what you were...
I would be thankful and work my ass off.
I would not give my fans a piece of shit. Jabs? How dare you...
what did you expect would happen? That you can just move on?
No. I am throwing out your CD and deleting from my computer.
You are a worthless piece of shit. I do not care if this gets deleted...
you still are a piece of worthless shit.
You stood there and made a reality show on how real you are....
you sick hypocrite. Do you think we are stupid?
I think it would have been better if you just sang it and messed up...
as opposed to treating your fans as complete fucking morons.
I never felt this strongly about something and I am not the only one.
Ashley you are a fake and you lost fans because you lied and cheated them.
For that Ashley, you should go to hell, or at least get the hell off my tv and radio...
you have no business being there.
Guess living in the shadow isnt all its cracked up to be huh? Yah...
people actually do have to have talent and work hard in the world ..
believe it or not. Your a dumb spoiled kid. I hate you.
Your Ex-Fan,
Carly

Dear God, what's become of pop culture?!? Remember when SNL used to be funny? The quality of that show dwindles further & further with each passing year & now, thank you Ashlee Simpson, for putting the icing on that godforsaken cake. What a horrid trainwreck that was...and I'm not even referring to the whole lip-sync thing. She's not the first to have done it & she certainly won't be the last... I'm referring to the horribly embarrassing (not to mention incredibly unprofessional) way she handled herself onstage during the whole mishap.. Dancing like a damn fool & then hightailing it outta there while leaving her bandmates onstage?!?! No No No nononononononononooooo!! I've been doing live theater for years & you never ever EVER walk off stage when a huge fuck up occurs.. especially leaving the rest of your fellow castmates onstage to muddle through it & try to cover up the error. Eventhough starting over would've been rather awkward, it at least would've been a helluva lot more graceful than that so-called "hoedown" & unexpected exit..
And THEN, you do not come back and apologize, blaming everyone else but yourself! ("Sorry about that folks...but it's very difficult to work with a bunch of idiots...") Not a direct quote, of course, but pretty much what was implied by her little "apology". It just goes to show how inexperienced & immature she really is as a performer.
But what disturbs me the most is that I'm surrounded by people who actually enjoy this sort of over-produced, sugar-coated, so-called MUSIC! With every new pop song that comes out, it's basically like the music industry taking a giant shit.. regurgitated versions of the same damn song! And with every new pop song that comes out, it makes me turn up the volume on my Led Zeppelin cd a little higher.
Good luck at the Radio Music Awards, Ashlee... hope you don't get boo'd offstage...
And now I'm not going to waste another thought on Ashlee Simpson... I'm going to go & pray for the music industry's soul... And I'm not even religious.
Poster 3
---
Most of you have stated that Ashlee has taken away a spot in the industry from people who deserve it like yourselves. That is the most hatefilled and self- centered line I have ever heard in my whole life.
---
Hatefilled? Perhaps. Jealous? Sure.
Self-centered? Maybe.
True? ... Absolutely
---
You have no right to say who deserves what and why. There is a reason why everything will and has happened.
---
I agree. There is a reason why Ashlee made a true embarassment of herself. She wasn't meant to be there in the first place. She deserves everything that's about to come her way.
---
This was a mishap and it doesn't really have an effect on how talented Ashlee is. She can sing, write songs, act, and most importantly empower
us.
---
Then why didn't she *show* us just how talented she really was? Why didn't she really write her own songs? Why couldn't she *sing* her own song at a surprise moment? She *wrote* it, didn't she?
---
I mean hell look at all these comments, she has defiantly has an impact on all of us. If she didn't no one would've gotten truly upset or no one would've tried to stand up for her.
---
Nice spin, pawn. I hope Ashlee believes that one.
As a professional musician who's been in a major-label band, dropped from said label, owns a recording studio and can't stop working with music and musicians/ artists if he tried, the career of Ashlee Simpson makes me absolutely sick.
The tagline of the television show was what got me: "From the record label contract to the first show, you'll see it all." Now to who else does it seem that that's very backwards from the world of real musicians?
I can understand the role of the entertainer, as opposed to the musician, as opposed to the artist. Ashlee Simpson is NO artist. Ashlee Simpson is NO musician. Ashlee is *barely* an entertainer.
Why is she making millions of dollars in an industry that I and my hard-working bandmates were essentially kicked out of? How is that fair? It's not! And I can accept that! But if you can't *allow* us to enjoy the swan dive that this *fake entertainer* is taking, then YOU'RE ignoring OUR feelings! How about treating US as equals?
I am SO glad to see this "accident" happen. It was happy retribution for all the years of idiot pop music I've had to put up with and compete with for years. Hopefully this is the beginning of the trend - the cynicism will have reached it's breaking point and things will change again for the better.
Ashlee, if you have started a trend towards appreciation for better music, then my hats off to you! You are my hero! How's THAT spin for ya?
Can't wait to see her tomorrow night on the awards show. That'll be the defining moment. You managers and spin artists better put on your smart caps for this one.
And to be nice, I will wish Ashlee well... here's my one word of advice: college.

I went to SNL's message board on Sunday morning when I saw the story on Good Morning America. (The anchor did his own lip-sync to make the point.) Whew! One poster referred to her as Ashlee "Syncson". Another poster quoted her in a magazine saying that she would NEVER lip-sync.
Most berated SNL for not having real "live" musicians actually perform "live" good music on the show, instead of pop stars who lip-sync.
"Singer Ashlee Simpson's "extra help" may have been exposed when a "Saturday Night Live" audience heard her voice — singing the wrong song — while she held a microphone at her waist.
Her record company blamed a computer glitch and she blamed her band for Sunday morning's incident, which cut off her planned performance of the song "Autobiography" on the network comedy show."
"Her record company, Geffen Records, said there was a computer glitch. Instead of some pretaped electronic percussion, the recording of "Pieces of Me" started mistakenly performing, the record company said in a statement.
But it sounded suspiciously like a guide vocal that's a common — although almost always unspoken — concert aid. Either the singer "lip synchs" by mouthing words to a backing tape or has a live microphone and sings along to the tape, making the voice sound more powerful than it is.
Such vocal tricks have been used before on the show, making "Saturday Night Live" not entirely live, said a show insider who spoke on condition of anonymity.
A Geffen spokeswoman did not immediately return a call for comment.
Simpson's walk-off joins the lore of other unexpected music moments on "SNL": Elvis Costello stopping and changing songs on live TV, and Sinead O'Connor tearing up a picture of the pope."

Here's another article from the New York Daily News:
"In a humiliating appearance on "Saturday Night Live," Simpson held a microphone at her hip while her voice boomed from the speakers - then inexplicably blamed her band for making her look like a karaoke coward."
"Simpson is scheduled to perform again on TV tonight for the "Radio Music Awards." The show will be live from Las Vegas - but will Simpson be?"

Maybe this will be the wake-up call America needs to realize how FAKE much of the RIAA pop crap forced down our throats is. Don't get me wrong. Not every artist on the RIAA roster reeks of golden spoon fed primped up pop star with no talent. Every now and then the RIAA manages to get real talent to us (in spite of itself). Sometimes they manage to do so without destroying the career of that talented person. But it's obvious from this poor display what Ashlee Simpson is made of.... sugarcoated RIAA bullcrap designed to make money off of others successes.
Funny thing though, the RIAA continues to lie. Last I heard the record label stated she doesn't lip synch. Yeah right. Watch her first song. It's so obvious she was lip synching that performance, that I can't believe the record label would lie like that. But then again, it is an RIAA label. I shouldn't be so surprised.

Even Britney once sang something live on SNL...it sounded horrible, but at least she made the attempt...only once, granted.
Ashlee Simpson is a perfect example of the depths to which the music industry has SUNK and SNL has exploited, to their own detriment.
