"DoJ sides with RIAA in Verizon suit
07:24 AM +1000, Apr 22 2003
The US DoJ has apparently sided with the RIAA in its attempt to force Verizon to hand over the name of a subscriber who is accused of copyright infringement. The DoJ brief somehow manages to argue that prosecuting the subscriber will uphold the right to free speech.
A U.S. Justice Department brief, filed Friday in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, supports the effort by the Recording Industry Association of America to force Verizon Internet Services Inc. to identify a subscriber suspected of offering more than 600 songs from well-known artists.
Verizon has asked a federal judge to halt a subpoena for the subscriber's identity, arguing it violates the U.S. Constitution because it does not provide "protection of the expressive and associational interests of Internet users."
[...]
The Justice Department filing said the subpoena was legal and no constitutional protection would be violated through disclosure of the name. The Justice Department brief contends upholding copyright law itself would "promote First Amendment ideals.

I'm so happy--for the first time in my life, my voter's registration came in the mail today. I have never wanted to vote before, because I didn't see any difference to speak of in the candidates. Pat yourselves on the back, all you people here, 'cause the only reason I did it is that I started to visit here, then I started to read; then I read some more; and now I drive everyone crazy talking politics and RIAA all day long. But I've gotten a few people interested, and that's how it works, I guess. Hopefully, they get a few people interested, and so on.. Now I can't wait to vote!!

I don't understand what's the big deal about this draft stuff. it's DOA. only one congressman is actively advocating it. and that's Charlie Rangel a Democrat. critizing Bush on his record is fair game. critizing him on what he says, or doesn't say, is also fair game. but speculating and criticizing him on something he may or may not do (Kerry says he won't accept a draft either) isn't. if we call him a liar on it we need to call Kerry a liar too.
BTW Mothers are naturally protective of their children. that makes them good moms. but at the age of 18 the adult decides for him or herself. If they feel it's right for them to go ( as thousands do) then that's the way it is. My father yelled and screamed at me for voting for Dukakis in 1988. I loved and respected him but I told him that's what I want, please respect it.
But I do agree with shadow mom that if the draft went through and my son didn't want to go, I'd move hell to keep him out, including helping him leave the country. if he decided to go, I'd respect it as his choice even though I don't like it.

Charles Rangel (D-NY) introduced a bill to reinstate the draft in the House, which was defeted by the hourse 402-2. I'm still looking for who submitted the proposal in the senate, but it was also a democrat. BWT, the tow REps that voted for the bill were Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., and Rep. Pete Stark, D-CA.

Lachatte--I read your link about the draft. it was interesting, but do you watch any professional sports on a regular basis? Bush saying there will be no draft is just like when an owner of a team gives his coach a vote of confidence. In a matter of days, the coach is usually looking for a new job. As long as the bill sits there ready to activate, we have to keep an eye on it. A very close public eye, because we all know we can trust the government to tell us the truth--Republicans and Democrats alike. I hope they really see the problems with the draft, and how it divides a country far worse than the divisions we now have. If they don't, the sixties didn't teach them anything.
