Pharmaceutical politics

What other issue can bring liberals like Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton together with conservatives like Trent Lott and contrarians like John McCain?

"The reason this is so popular in Congress is that it is so popular in the country," says Barry Piatt, a top aide to Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan, who is spearheading the effort to legalize drug importation.

And this last line was the one that held my attention...perhaps the reason the riaa is having such a bad time with putting their poison through congress is because p2p and filesharing IS popular in the country.

It still seems that the media is still in bed with the drug companies, emphasising how "dangerous" it is for this to happen

Just wait until biotech becomes really widespread. GM crops are causing enough of a problem already - how can you profit from a product that is self-reproducing?

Since the largest cost of bringing a prescription drug to market has become marketing rather than research and development, the solution is simple. Do to the drug companies what they did to the tobacco industry; forbid them from advertising on tv and in general publications. We cannot buy these drugs without a doctor's prescription so why bother advertising to us anyway? With hundreds of millions of dollars no longer going down the drain, they would have no choice but to pass the lower cost on to the consumer. Prediction: this will NEVER happen.

While the RIAA/MPAA plays games with our music and movie preferences, it's the pharmaceutical congolmerates which are the biggest threat to our rights AND our health. It is because of these slimy commercials which seem to be airing every two seconds that the health care plan I pay for at work is next to useless. They must really hate it to have to add those side effect warnings at the end of every commercial. "Propecia may cause your head to explode...but don't worry...we spent at least 500 bucks on R&D to make sure it was safe." Personally, I think they are pushing out a giant placebo industry, telling people what they want to hear.

Back to what I was thinking, is, wouldn't you think that just about everyone in Congress knows someone who is downloading music? nephews, nieces, their children, brothers, sisters, etc...., henceforth, the popularity of filesharing in the country?

I can just hear Hatch's grandkids.."C'mon grandpa, it's only sharing, get a life will ya?"

"As for the level of public support for importation, a White House official says the president "doesn't make policy based on polls." "

Maybe that's why Bush is going to be voted out of office this time.

If they don't want importation because it is "unsafe," why don't they regulate the prices, like most of these other countries do. If only one company can sell a drug because they hold a patent, then price regulation should step in where free market competition cannot.
