Microsoft idea of a worthy LInux competitor...
Posted by AdvancedOlivier in on September 28, 2004 at 12:11 PM

Microsoft will release a low-price version of Windows in Russia by the end of the year, an effort to wean consumers in that country off pirated software and Linux. Too bad it only runs 3 applications at a time and doesn't allow networking...

36$ for a watered down OS that Windows 95 can outmanuever?
Sounds like one expensive coaster.

MS tried this in other regions too. Without much success. MS has a problem there. Unlicenced windows potentially costs them a huge amount of money, but its also the main reason people dont use linux instead. If MS tries to prevent piracy, they risk benefiting linux. The sensible thing to do would be to ignore the situation in those countries too poor to afford windows, just lower prices there a little and wait for them to catch up economicly. But that does not help the antipiiracy executive who each month must talk to the higher-ups about the $x billion losses they are doing nothing about.

A low price cut back version? If nobody pays for the REAL one, why would they pay for one that's worse? lol.

Microsoft at their best. Hey Bill.. I think you're just supposed to drop the price if nobody is buying it. I don't think you're not supposed to gut the product too.
