Lucasfilm against parody
Posted by AdvancedOlivier in on September 26, 2004 at 2:07 PM

The long arm of director George Lucas' legal team has reached out and put a lightsaber at the throat of a local non-profit theater group. Theater and sci-fi buffs hoping to catch Jet City Improv's send-up of "Star Wars" on Thursday were disappointed when the troupe told them that Lucasfilm Ltd. threatened legal action if it spoofed "Star Wars" that night. Or ever.

I remember, a few years ago when "Attack of the Clones" came out, an Internet reviewer noted about Mr. Lucas (alas, I'm paraphrasing) that at the time he made the first "Star Wars" film in the mid-1970's, he was Luke Skywalker; whereas today, he's Jabba the Hutt.

Lucas is a bitter old man, having been bested times ten in the fantasy film genre by Lord of the Rings, which kicks his lumbering Star Wars prequels' butt in every sense -- writing, acting, editing, special effects, you name it. This achievement has severely deflated his delusions of grandeur.

Also he is bitter because America hasn't adopted his grossly overpriced and technically inferior digital projection scheme for movie theaters across the fruited plain -- for us all to see his latest digitally filmed and edited Star Wars prequel.

So, what's left for the poor wretch except to strike out in pitiful ways like this? Oh and also, as part of his revenge, he'll be releasing another Star Wars movie next year. Haven't we suffered enough? But no, he's got to sue someone who decided to deride his ripe-for-parody overindulgent films.

Well said, autodidact. I'm just waiting for Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and all the rest of the "past voices of high ideals" to speak out as our "past Luke Skywalker" has. All bow down to the one and only true god---the "money-making entertain machine".

"If the show were free, there's a chance that the legal department of Lucasfilm would not have responded."

i suppose so. just like it's possible that violent J will send me a 12-pack of Faygo for Christmas.
