RealNetworks breaks Apple's hold on iPod

RealNetworks is expected to announce Monday that it has unlocked some of Apple Computer's most tightly held technology secrets, giving its music a way onto the popular iPod digital music player.
The announcement is part of a broader release of RealNetworks software, which will let songs sold from the company's online store play on a variety of portable devices, including the iPod and Microsoft-compatible rivals. RealNetworks has been selling songs from its digital song store since January, but the files could previously be played only on a few portable devices.
The new Harmony software, which RealNetworks said mimics the proprietary copy protection used in Apple's iTunes store, is sure to be controversial. Apple has previously refused to provide licenses to companies seeking iPod compatibility, and RealNetworks did not seek permission before releasing its own version of iPod-friendly software.

I will never use real player, and I am not nearly the only person who feels that way. I won't use real or apple, and I feel sorry for saps who do.

Why is it okay for corporations to reverse engineer, but, it's not okay for me to do it?
"mimics the proprietary copy protection used in Apple's iTunes store"
Geez; Do As I Say, Not As I Do.

Reverse engineering is legal, actually it's even protected by the law if I remember correctly. What isn't, is to bypass a copyright protection mechanism.

You know, I always get a kick out of those "I'll never use [ insert software name here ]" type of remarks. I've used real audio and whatever it was called before for years and my computers have never exploded. The same for winamp, windows media player , Musicmatch jukebox, netscape radio..the list goes on and on.
The only reason I like to use real audio is the local CBC radio programming is broadcasted on it 24/7, so I can always hear what's going on at home. Besides that, a lot of websites use real audio for streaming, so why cut yourself off?

I think they DMCA will have something to say about this. Waits for Apple's response.

Really, who gives a crap about either Apple DRM downloads or Real Networks DRM music? I do not buy music online, do you?
This whole charade makes it sound like the iPod only plays proprietary copy protected music - what pure BS!
The iPod is the BEST MP3 player on the market, PERIOD. If you choose not to use an iPod, YOUR LOSS!

You're the one who spent hundreds of dollars to own one. I didn't. Actually it is your loss. Many people will spend enormous sums to be part of the latest fad.
I'm sure it is a very good player. Whether it is a good value -- that might be seriously, legitimately disputed.
