The First DMusic Awards!
Posted by Reggaepopcicle in on July 21, 2004 at 7:00 PM

Here's how it works...

Round One - Nominations (July 21st - August 4th)

Nominations will take place for two weeks. There are 24 Music Categories and they are listed below. Each member may choose two songs to nominate per category, sent via dnote to the "dmusic counter" who next to each category. All nominations must be for songs except category 22 and 23 which are for artists only. Members may nominate their own songs but only one per category. Please include both category nominations within a single dnote. Duplicate nominations will be counted as a single nomination. Members are not required to nominate for every category, but are encouraged to do so.

Once all the Nominations are in, the "dmusic counters" will announce the top nominated songs for each Music Category. The larger categories may have more nominees than the smaller ones, but in the end (after the voting) there will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner for each category.

Round Two - Voting (August 10th - August 24th)

When all nominated songs are posted, you may listen to those songs and artists and then place your vote. Members will be allowed to vote twice per category and again must send a single dnote containing both category votes to the "dmusic counter" responsible for that specific category. Members may vote for theior own song, but again only once per category. This second round of voting will last for two weeks. Members must have at least 200 points and must have joined DMusic before August 4th to be eligible to vote. (We will be checking!)

Awards End

Once the votes have been counted, we will announce the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for each category as well as the song that received the most votes overall as "Best Song".

There may be some surprises for the winners, but for these you'll will have to wait and see!

Remember, only two song nominations per category for Round One, and two votes per category in Round Two.

Go forth, listen, nominate and vote for your favorite songs and artists... and most of all, have fun!

Good luck to everyone!

Just to clarify, since I don't think this is explicitly stated in the ground rules -- Do songs nominated for a category have to be categorized that way? (This is probably a redundant and stupid question, but I just want to clarify.) Like if someone's song is labelled "other" but really seems like it should be competing as "alternative" -- I couldn't nominate it for alternative, right?
Anonymousonewhodreams
Date: July 21, 2004 @ 8:56 PM
I would say that whatever the song is labeled is the category it is in. If, in the future, dmusic runs another Awards Competition then possibly we can work something else out, but right now that would be too confusing.
Anonymousonewhodreams

I just realized that there is one instance where the label is not a factor. That's the "Instrumental" category. Any "song" from any genre may be nominated for this category, but of course it must be completely Instrumental. Nodding

also i think we missed a BIG RULE here too (and for the threads for which the awards are covered)

ANY BAND/ARTIST ATTEMPTING TO PERVERT THE AWARDS BY "SHAMELESSLY" OR OTHERWISE PLUGGING THEIR BANDS IN OR AROUND THE AWARDS AREA SHOULD BE CONSIDERED INELIGIBLE FOR AN AWARD.

i think thats a fair point, promotions have a forum and you have the community shoutbox too. this is a fair competition so stop being lame asses, grow up and make some decent music Groovin

Sorry if I broke an un announced rule, I just want to get my music ou, I really don't care if we win or not. It would be cool, but I just want to be like, "hey check out my music, If you like it download it and support it, If you don't then tell me what you think or move on to other music. I am open for ideas and I am cool if my music isn't the best, but it wont change a lot, cause it is almost a finished product."

dad gummit, this contest is to hard to participate in. I want to be able to nominate for each category, but you have to go on a search for each artist to find the names of the artist or song and then come back and ...aaargh

Logistically it is a tough thing for the average dmusic user to do. Next time, maybe a link/button at each song as you find it to click that says "nominate this song for the contest, you can change your mind later because we only allow 1 or 2 nominations per category" would help.

There is so much GREAT music at dmusic, it is just hard to find/discover. (And not just during the contest, I mean, all the time!)

AdvancedThaspian

This seems thought out very well, although I do remember someone at DM who suggested in the forums that the nominations take place for a month, and that the voting go on for two weeks. The awards are announced with vastly different schedules than what was suggested, and at the last minute it winds up being changed to what was originally suggested by this person in the forum, since what was chosen was too short a timetable. :o (Eeek!) Figures.
Anonymousonewhodreams
Date: August 4, 2004 @ 7:38 PM
The only thing that was changed, if you read the Rules posted in this thread, is the added week for Voting. And that's because everyone felt rushed these past two weeks.

I don't think that's "vastly" different really? Shrug

DMembergrannyapple
Date: August 4, 2004 @ 11:20 PM
I think his point was, people felt "rushed" because there wasn't enough time for nominations, as that person had stated then in the forums when a month was suggested. Why were people rushed now? What was the purpose? Now, not only have the nominations been extended, but so has the voting time (from one week to two). Seems like a complete reworking of the durations.

The awards are a great idea. It just seems several good ideas had been disregarded only to be regarded again at the last minute.

But.. Have fun, good luck to everyone, and may the meep be with you!! :D (Big Grin)

Yes, the awards rock! Bouncy Bouncy Bouncy

Fact remains, the changing of the dates and durations after they had been announced makes it appear somewhat unprofessional, and several people have already voiced their concerns about not having enough time. This is something that had been thought almost a year ago, so we're hoping to soon see the final dates and deadlines. Just thinking is all. Go forth, and may the meep be with you. Bouncy

I for one am happy as a lark to have turned in nominations for 16 out of the 24 categories by the deadline. Maybe a little rushed but definitely a GOOD rush! The Awards turned out to be a great incentive for me to finally get around to listening to some music I had meant to for a long time. This was like a musical treasure hunt, and I certainly was the one who prospered. Nodding

What I want to know is, when are we going to have a Dmusic party? I think there should be an annual get-together (2 days probably in a hotel with a small concert hall?) It would be so cool to do that. I know it would take money and a lot of time to organise (I'm not offering) but I bet loads of people would support it and buy tickets. I was asked to be a "nomination vote counter". I declined because I knew how much work it would be and how little time I had to offer to the project. So I have nothing but total admiration for those who did step up to the plate and help out. I did place 2 nominations in all 24 categories.

These awards would not have even happened if Diane Jessurun(onewhodreams) did not spearhead this and get it off the ground. I don't usually get involved in these things, but for chrissake, GET OFF HER BACK. We owe her debt of gratitude, not a hard time.

She first proposed these awards about 9 months ago ... nothing happened. She received little or no support. Then a couple months ago she posted a forum note asking for help in trying to find her very old thread on the topic. Again, not too much help there either. So, knowing how to do this, I looked it up for her and sent her the thread URL.

This time more interest was generated, but it was Diane who made these awards happen. Once the bandwagon started rolling, then others jumped on board quickly.

Please bear in mind that this was the FIRST DMusic awards. Anytime you try something for the first time, there will always be "areas for improvement." Diane knows this, and I'm sure she is willing to accept any positive constructive criticisms you have to offer. Heck, I even have a few of my own.

But these "areas for improvement" should be interpreted as "lessons learned," NOT what was done wrong. Nothing was done wrong, because nothing had been ever done before. You have to start somewhere. Give Diane credit for doing something! It is easy to be a "Monday Morning Quarterback" or having 20/20 hindsight ... pick your cliché.

So Diane, you have my heartfelt and sincere appreciation for all your personal hard work, time and effort you put into making the First DMusic Awards a successful reality! Clapping
