Barnum had it right; there is one born every minute.
Maybe in this case more than one...

you know.. the current figures they have for an entire year have yet to touch the p2p traffic of one day worldwide.
The figures are small enough to account for filesharers trying a single file, immediately feeling the strangulation of the DRM, and abandoning the service immediately.

I actually had a little faith and tried a song... it refused to let me make a music video to my own footage because "it violated the terms of the protection on that file".
what a crock. long live freedom.

So?? Since when did we care whether or not an album went gold/silver/whatever?
Although, it will be fun to see how they manipulate the figures this time.

i think this is a lobbying ploy, to make this market, which still loses money for any companies who enter it, seem more established/accepted than it really is.
Politicians appear to believe the big lies already, but such a tangled web of deception requires periodic bolstering with misinformation.

some of the criteria for this is that it has to be with "legitimate" site and thier album sell have to exceed thier downloads for it too count.. but going platinum is like 200,000 downloads..

Isn't the RIAA simply copying what the DEMO website (www.d-e-m-o.com) already has in place?

A Gold or Platinum record from the RIAA translates into money for the artists they give them to. Not to mention it's a real status symbol, too. I have no IPod, and never even visited their site. Do they offer free downloads, or do they just offer samples?

I agree with awher, this is just the RIAA's attempt to make their "legitimate" sites look better than places like Dmusic, garageband and download.com's music downloading site.
And of course only RIAA "authorized" music will be allowed to be designated silver/gold/platinum.

Now we know that the RIAA participates in payolla. Wanna bet these figures aren't manupliated also? Not to mention the artist won't see a dime off the d/l. There will be that created accounting under promotion or some such...

Come to think of it, what's to stop the RIAA from downloading their own songs (say, Avril) just to jack up the figures?

They could do that, but it's against the law. Of course, with the RIAA being above the law it's a wonder they're not already doing it.

NiceGuy2003 I assume you are, being facetious? Riaa has been buying their own music for years to jack up specific artists ratings...
HAPPY 4th of JULY EVERYONE!!!!

A little late, but happy 4th to you, too, pepe...it's still the best country in the world, just needs a little tinkering now and then. I guess that's why we have kids--to keep the old geezers honest. Have a good one, everybody!!
