The organization Reporters Without Borders (www.rsf.org) have issued their 2004 report on the Internet Under Surveillance. It is not surprising to see Internet restrictions in countries ruled by totalitarian governments, but even the democratic ones are increasing their surveillance.
The link:
http://www.rsf.org/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=433
will take you to the introduction of the report and on the right side you will find a menu that will allow you to browse the situation in a long list of countries.
This link:
http://www.rsf.org/article.php3?id_article=10760
will take you to a section where the surveillance/restrictions in democratic countries is considered.
This link:
http://www.rsf.org/article.php3?id_article=10612&Valider=OK
will bring you to a section on the USA. The report does not discuss the recent bills aimed at limiting or eliminating P2P networks, but it does mention how US corporations are not shy when it comes to helping foreign governments censor Internet content.

And that last point ("helping foreign governments censor Internet content") sounds like part and parcel of what was manifested just yesterday.

the bills in congress are scary. maybe they're not worth mentioning because there's so much hypocracy to them and the report wants to appear above board. there's a great video that demonstrates that hypocracy.

Here's the model - government is supposed to leave me the hell alone when I'm on the phone, on the internet, watching tv, whatever! For f**k's sake, can I please not have Dick Cheney and John Ass-croft sorting through my emails to see whether messages from my gf contain hidden terrorist (or worse, anti-corporate) messages?

I will have to agree with mccain2004.
Their motto: "If you're not doing anything wrong, you shouldn't care."
No. If you hate liberty, you don't care. And John Ashcroft hates liberty.

Good link compmore. Thanks. People need to be shown the hypocracy because it's so easily missed - especially when the hypocrites are making such a loud noise about p2p, etc.
