When free is profitable

The first time Moe played San Francisco, the band didn't have a song on the radio. It didn't have a video; it didn't even have a record deal. Yet the group sold out the 750-seat Great American Music Hall.

The secret to Moe's success? A community of West Coast music fans had been trading tapes of the New York band's concerts, duplicating bootlegged recordings and distributing them to friends. The members of Moe never saw a dime off those concert tapes, but they arrived in San Francisco to a full house.

"Even Moe, which outlines a concert-taping policy on its Web site, specifically prohibits trading of the group's official releases."

You know, that reminds me of when I was a waiter in Wisconsin.

They had a "class" for all the wait staff, and the guy told us that word of mouth is the best way to get people to show up, which is why managers will do special things for people when problems happen.

Hmm...

Mroop, I don't see any mention of trading official releases.
Oh, I forgot ...
If they trade one they MUST be trading the other as well. We're obviously all crooks

Nice try, but that is absolutely nowhere in the article or on their web site. It's OK to have an agenda, but back it up honestly.

fatchuck: The quote from mroop IS from the website, towards the end of the article.

I always thought there were two reasons for Moe's success...
One was that killer roundhead bowl haircut, and Two, was
that two fingered eye poke he patented...

Back up the "honest" stuff, bub. Mroop may be a pain in the ass but he's always right on the money with the quotes (his anal qualities cause anal aggravation for everyone else :) (Smile) ).

Irrespective of that small line, however...the main gist of the article overwhelmingly supports p2p sharing as a method of self promotion. This particular band apparently doesn't have any restrictions with recording of their concert performances. I'm not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if other artists have to give a cut to the record labels when they perform their own music or sell merchandise and thereby would have to restrict live recordings.
Mroop likes to find nit picky quotes and such which allows him to keep up his santimonious attitude towards filesharing.
Well, bub...the law as it goes right now helps that attitude but eventually just like prohibition it will bite the dust and you'll have to suck it up and look for something else to shit all over. Maybe you could go door to door at kid's parties telling them they are violating neighborhood noise regulations.

What this article fails to mention is that Moe is a jam band. Pretty much all jam bands follow the model developed by The Grateful Dead, which is to allow tape trading and tour like crazy. The whole jam band scene is based upon live concerts with lots of improvisation. If you want to download free jam band music then go to this site.

"Remember the days when you had to "luckily meet" a taper or "friend of a taper" at a show or you had a friend who knew a friend who knew someone who lived next to someone that knew a friend who may know a taper?

In those days, "that" was the only way to find your favorite live Jamband music. In those days, multi-generational cassette recordings and half-set shows were common. That was then... and this is Now!

The Furthur Network changes everything about sharing and trading by allowing you, me and everyone else to share their tunes with each other. It is peer-to-peer, so what you share is available to everyone else on the Network. Download music 24/7/365.

The Furthur Network is the first and only 100% non-commercial, open-source, peer-to-peer network of legal live music created by fans for fans!"

That is not a nitpicky quote. It clearly states that Moe does not want their official releases traded. You got a problem with that then take it up with Moe! : )
