RIAA Offline Again, MyDoom Suspected
Posted by Advancedpepe512000 in on May 17, 2004 at 4:32 PM

May 17, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The Web site for the Recording Industry Association for America (RIAA.com) is again suffering significant downtime, a report by research and analysis firm Netcraft (www.netcraft.com) says. The site was down on Sunday, May 16 and again on Monday, May 17.

In March, the RIAA Web site was brought down as a result of a DoS attack launched by computers infected with a variant of the MyDoom virus (MyDoom.F). The virus is programmed to launch an attack against RIAA between the 17th and 22nd of each month, making the virus a likely culprit in the site’s new performance troubles.

At press time, the Web site for the RIAA, heavily involved in efforts to combat online music piracy, was online.

Sounds like switching to a Linux platform wasn't enough....

Could it be that they have accumulated soo many unhappy techie types that they will be attacked no matter the platform?

Oh, well....At least they loose one of their propaganda sources.

Why doesn't anyone ever hit www.emigroup.com or www.sonymusic.com or www.warnerbrosrecords.com or www.bmgentertainment.com or www.umusic.com ?!

Those organizations are the real problem. The RIAA wouldn't continue to exist without them.

The big 5 hide behind the RIAA for PR purposes. It's working very well. Nothing against this site, but I rarely hear a call to boycott the real culprits.

It should be stated more often for the benefit of the general public that the "RIAA" is really SONY, WARNER MUSIC, UNIVERSAL MUSIC, EMI, and BMG.

You are RIGHT alteredbeast we all need to remember that when talking to others but I guess it is easier to say Riaa rather than list all the label names. Still we all need to try to expose the real Bastsrds!!!!!!!

i dont understand why someone hasnt messed up the firmware on their servers yet...

there are so many ways to do actual physical damage to computers from remote locations.

if more people understood this they would be less annoyed when someone "toys" with them.

Im pretty sure the government understands that though.. i mean.. they havent developed any antisatellite missiles since i dont know when..

im pretty sure they got smart and hired some helpers to take care of that without weapons if the need arises.

alteredbeast: In addition to hitting the five major label websites, the viruses also should've "taken out" propaganda sites like www.musicunited.org, www.respectcopyrights.org and www.stealingisillegal.com.

"Nothing against this site, but I rarely hear a call to boycott the real culprits."

Excuse me alteredbeast, but boycotting anything issued by an RIAA label IS boycotting those labels, the "REAL CULPRITS", as you describe them. This site takes the time to list each and EVERY label linked to the RIAA, in an effort to make sure we boycott the proper record labels. All you have to do is click on the "who to boycott" link on the left panel.

We aren't about hacking and destroying the RIAA website. What exactly would that accomplish anyways? We are here to hit them where it counts the most, their POCKETBOOKS. And only by boycotting their products will we be able to do so.
