What's in a Name
Posted by AdminCodeWarrior in on April 30, 2004 at 9:00 PM

We know that a lot of rock musicians only became stars after a name change.

Ringo of course was Richard Starkey.
Sting was Gordon Matthew Sumner
.
Prince started life as Prince Rogers Nelson .
John Cougar Mellencamp, was John Mellencamp..then "Johnny Cougar" ...then
Johnny Cougar Mellencamp.
Davie Bowie was David Jones.

Even Managers changed their names. The famous Colonel Tom Parker, Svengali to
Elvis, had the real name of Andreas Cornelius van Kujik.

I found a cool page with the real names of lots of famous people in music.
It's located at http://www.classicbands.com/realnames.html .

Sometimes, just a minor change seems to do the trick. Dionne Warrick hit the big time when she became Dionne Warwick...one letter change. In a similar vein, the average name of Sam Cook, became the handle of a big star when he became Sam Cooke.

Adam Ant's real name is Stuart Leslie Goddard .

One of my favorites is English pop star Cliff Richard , whose real name
is "Harry Webb"...and I think he could have stuck with his real name and
had an album cover of a hairy spider perched atop a hair covered web...but
that's just me, I'm not an A & R guy or manager.

Anyway, the page is interesting and fun to me.
Check it out...

What kinda name do you think might project you into the stratosphere of stardom?

Remember, Engelbert Humperdinck started life as the lowly Arnold George Dorsey
and Paul Revere (of Paul Revere and the Raiders) was born as Paul Revere Dick :)

Famous funny man Tim Conway was born Tom Conway.

Maybe I'll just change my moniker to Zippy T. Chipmunk.

Since my name is unpronounceable to most, I could change it to something that is simple and loved universally-- Soup.

I'd loved to have been a fly on the wall in the meeting where
Gerry Dorsey and his management, decided that Engelbert Humperdinck would be more catchy
than Arnold Dorsey :) (Smile)

That explains things. I thought 'campmore' might be a trademark dispute and didn't see how that would involve the FCC. Your REAL name changed by one letter, that makes more sense. (I've been redoing 'compmore' for an hour, LOL)

When I become a rock star, I will change my generic Hispanic last name (Galarza) to my mother's sexier maiden name, Portalatin!

Well, everyone calls me Johnny BoomBoom now, so I guess it counts as a name change. I'm going to embrace it, rather than when Darius Rucker repeated requested that people not call him "Hootie".

compmore, after following the link, I get it now. I was assuming you were talking about replacing the "p" with an "e" in your handle. I figure that would get you in hot water with the FCC as well. ;-) (Wink)
