"World Intellectual Property Day – April 26 – offers an ideal opportunity to promote, inform and teach the importance of intellectual property as a tool for economic, social and cultural development. The theme of World Intellectual Property Day 2004 will be “Encouraging Creativity.” WIPO urges its Member States to participate in the event and organize activities on a national level.
WIPO has produced a variety of promotional material to assist with outreach activities for World Intellectual Property Day. Three new posters, along with a CD containing print-ready versions of the posters in the 6 official languages of the United Nations, were sent to all WIPO Member States at the end of 2003. The Organization has also released three 30-second television spots centered on this year's theme. The three spots will air on CNN over the next year and are available for broadcast to all Member States.
WIPO is also sending a World Intellectual Property Day information kit to Member States, which includes:
a message from WIPO Director General Kamil Idris
a leaflet (Adobe PDF) and order form (Adobe PDF) for the "Creative Planet" video series
a World Intellectual Property Day poster and bookmarks
two new guides for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), "Making a Mark" (Adobe PDF) and "Looking Good" (Adobe PDF).
WIPO invites its Member States and all the organizations receiving its outreach material to inform the Organization of any activities planned at the national level. The broad participation and support received during the previous observations of World Intellectual Property Day has helped make the event a success worldwide."

One World. One Mind. Lovely. And the negative nabobs & nay-sayers of Dmusic say none of it matters. Stay Home and Write A Song Day.
I've gotten ahold of the materials that Cory Docterow and others are submitting to challenge the agenda submitted at the WIPO/Geneva World Day. I've been asked for suggestions. Already our protestations have watered down the rubberstamp proposals to extend another layer of copyright and DRM to broadcaster database lists and websites.
The propaganda materials mentioned above I'd love to get ahold of, Code, let's try to get it. Excellent opportunity to apply our art skills like AdBusters.
Please note the protests yesterday at Coke's corporate meeting. Taking back the streets will only grow this summer. My own opinion is that elections in the US are a useless exercise, as are any attempts to input advice to the military White House. What option do you have other than pouring into the street and stopping the economy in its tracks?
Flame away.

Intellectual property should have it's own day, it's a great thing. It's just that the day before should be Anti-WIPO day.

Should Anti-WIPO, Anti-NAFTA, Anti-WTO, and Anti-FTAA be the same day on a seperate day each?

A video series has been produced. I like the songwriter guy quoted below.
Gian Marco, Singer-Songwriter,
Peru
On his inspiration
One night, I grabbed my guitar and I suddenly realized that the world had
changed for me. That the meaning of life had changed. That I was born to
be on stage, any stage, be it in the limelight or not, in front of lots of
people or just a few…
My goal was to say… things, as humanly as possible. I talk about
falling in love and falling out of love, I talk about life, behavior and human nature… Sometimes I feel I can break the invisible armor that prevents us, many of us, from seeing who we really are. My message is very human: I combine everyday-life with poetry.
I was born in Peru. I am extremely proud of being Peruvian and I want to
be famous on a global scale, like any other artist! We, musicians, creators, we are all a little crazy, we have a strong will to pass on to others everything we have inside, to dive into a different atmosphere…
On the Creative Process
Creativity is impossible to learn. We are born with it; we just have to find it. Creativity lies within us – WE ARE creativity. It means learning to see ourselves and to see others, learning to see things which others cannot see. Creativity knows no limits. Creativity is always with us, provided we grab its hand and take good care of it!
On Music Piracy
I don’t think there’s a single person on Earth who would say: “I’ll sing for the love of singing and I’ll live off that love.” You have to earn a living! As time passes by, the opportunity to sell records decreases – not only for me, I am new to the international market, but first and foremost for those who are still to come. When I see people selling pirate CDs
on the streets, I ask myself lots of questions. I tell myself that those people are committing a crime. It’s almost like being robbed. These are my
songs, my records, and I feel robbed every day, because someone is fiddling with a product which has cost me a whole year of work and quite a
few sleepless nights! And today, that product lies in the hands of unscrupulous people who simply do not care about that.
Faced with that plague (of piracy), I feel powerless, because you can’t
stop it, unless we all start considering piracy as a real threat. For the time being, piracy boils down to a mere comment: “Oh, piracy, it’s terrible! And this, and that…!”
I have had singles from new CDs released before the CDs were even
released… singles that weren’t even planned. So, I think the only way to
survive as an artist is to either fight to sell a sufficient number of discs or to do what artists are doing around the world: live from live concert performances and forget about disc sales.
The only chance for the music industry is to make sure that the

There was a plan to have "World Corporate Greed Day," but they couldn't decide on which day to have it. Then they felt like a single day wasn't enough, so they tried to establish "World Corporate Greed Month." Finally they just decided that every day was "Greed" day.

What we need in this world is a "Worldwide Intellectual Freedom Day." My daughter has to write a paper comparing and contrasting life in Nazi Germany with our life today. The comparison is beginning to get more scary every day.

I have to qualify my remarks by saying that the trials & tribulations of folk culture artists in delevoping nations are different from my own reality in the US. Nontheless, the dj's and alternative artists working in China (for example) would never get caught dead sampling the state-sponsored cheesy official pop artists.
This fellow's statement below leaves me dumbfounded:
"I don’t think there’s a single person on Earth who would say: “I’ll sing for the love of singing and I’ll live off that love.” You have to earn a living! As time passes by, the opportunity to sell records decreases – "
I could easily straighten this fellow out.
I stand shoulder-to-shoulder in solidarity with any songwriter such as this fellow who grasps the impossibility of getting a foot in the door to broadcasting.
This then is the truth: WIPO is being overwhelemd with corrupt and wealthy broadcasters who are attempting to broaden their grasp over the developing internet. They are "venue shopping" for the lowest worldwide standards of consumer access.
NONE OF US disagrees with cracking heads and burning down real bootleggers in Asia and elsewhere. It should be simple enough to differentiate commercial operations from individuals. This anti-piracy movement and attacking consumers has been wrong-headed from the beginning. You can't help but be alarmed at Ashcroft's newfound affinity to ransack offices, schools and terrorize innocent bustanders.
But copyright differences amongst world cultures has no place in agreeing on standards of "signals," which is the correct way of establishing broadcast standards. The broadcaster coprorations are trying to blur the distinction between spectrum, community access and real-gods in warehouses.
COPYRIGHTING and DMCA'ing spectrum has alarming consequences of stifling political speech.
If the US media whores aren't enough to convince you, take a look at Italy, which is the laughing-stock of the world.

Hi Shadow Mom:
Here is the latest thought-provoking essay on Fascism. More books are coming out. Have your daughter read this essay.
http://www.counterpunch.org/shivani1026.html
Please note that the famous Godwin's Law says:
"As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one." There is a tradition in many groups that, once this occurs, that thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress. Godwin's Law thus practically guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length in those groups. However there is also a widely- recognized codicil that any intentional triggering of Godwin's Law in order to invoke its thread-ending effects will be unsuccessful."
I met Mike Godwin finally last week. He is an amazing defender of righteousness, former head of EFF, currently at Public Knowldge. One shudders to think what this sullied world would be without Mike's brilliant defense of Free Speech in the Supreme Court. Nonetheless, I do not agree with Godwin's Law. I promised Leflaw I'd have a few choice words to trade with Mike in that regard, but it seemed not to be the time & place, it being Lessig's book party after all.

Thanks, tomsong, I will. And pardon my bad manners, but every day it seems like more and more freedom is taken away, and I get very frightened--not for me, but for my daughter and all the other children of this country. It's like a huge wave of greed just keeps washing over the world, and when we get one thing fixed, a dozen other corporate zombies jump up. I wonder where it will all end sometimes.

I've kept up with current news for years through magazines, newspapers, and now the internet. But I was completely ignorant of all the laws, proposed laws and world organizations that are trying to restrict us in some way. Sometimes I'm overwhelmed by the complexity of all of these issues. Please continue to paraphrase and offer summaries of what the heck is going on out there!

Voltz, what is with you and communism? Jeezy Chreezy you sound like frickin Joseph McCarthy... learn the facts of communism... it is CAPITALISM that is creating this disgusting copyright mess. Please note that I have nothing against capitalism... except when it interferes with my basic fucking rights. The record labels, the movie industry, the software industry, the entire legislative branch of the United States government, John Assholecroft, and the Anti-American FBI are a few examples of entities which hate the American people and wish to trample on their rights simply so a few whiny, spoiled, soulless creeps can further enslave the American people to a "rentable" culture where the wishes of the public, and the public's own interest, are ignored simply so these selfish, greedy monsters can make another buck.

They say its to encourage creativity, but yet, they want to stamp out P2P, possibly the most creative media distribution tool ever made.
On the 26th, ill be downloading lots of music to encourage creativity (Listen to something different instead of radio garbage day) Download what you want to hear. be creative, listen to something different!

On this day, " Intellectual Property Day" ...
It would be amazing if we could get a significant
number of people to not purchase ANY intellectual
property.
No CD purchases.
No DVD purchases
No theater seats filled.
No Books purchased.
No software purchased.
One day, one day only ...
Buy NOTHING that involves media.
April 26 .. "what would intellectual Property be without the Consumer Day"

Imprimatur is Latin for "let it be printed." It is the legal authority to publish. I say we withhold the imprimatur from WIPO to publish anything ...
Hey, Wipo...leave them kids alone...all in all you're just a....nother brick in the wall.
