Comcast Corp., the world's largest cable-television operator, agreed to buy TechTV Inc. from Microsoft Corp. co-founder Paul Allen's Vulcan Programming Inc. and merge the cable-television network with Comcast's G4 channel, which features shows on video games.

The combined network will be available to 44 U.S. million cable and satellite viewers, Comcast said in a statement. The Philadelphia-based company did not disclose terms of the transaction.

Allen's investment company, Vulcan Inc., invested in TechTV in 1998 and later bought the entire channel in 2000 from founder Ziff-Davis Inc., according to TechTV's Web site.

The network's programs include shows such as "Nerd Nation," a documentary about people and technology, and "Fresh Gear," which reviews equipment such as printers and videophones.

A lot of content relevant to the fight against the RIAA has been aired on TechTV.

It remains to be seen how the new ownership will affect programming. Obviously, the channel is merging with "G4", whatever that is- about video games, I guess. I haven't seen the channel myself. It's not available here, at least not on basic expanded cable.

Another case of the WRONG people being in charge of programming they no nothing about.

Anyone remember this amazing ratings producing baheamoth called Scifi channel?
Well, back around 2000 some stupid woman was put in charge who had no background in scifi at all.

She summarily cancelled all anime, MST3K, then started cancelling the award winning originals which were just getting big around 2001.

Now Scifi is this cesspool of second rate b-movies, and half the time slots are "in typpical female fasion" occupied by this fake psychic guy who says to a group of 80 people.. "im getting a G name with Cancer.. a G name with Cancer".

Techheads dont watch tech tv for shows about video games. They watch it for shows about technology and the trends online, and *hugs all around* they started showing anime when scifi dropped it.

Note: I am posting this here because I do not know if you want to make a full article about it or not and this is the most recent topic at the moment.

I do not know if you guys know this or not but MTV showed a clip of on interview with DMX and the guy said he is going to quit making music and start making movies because he basically does not like the record labels and the fact that he has to pay to express his ideas and then ask for permission to use them. I am not a fan of DMX or the Rap and or Hip-Hop genre of music but I thought that was pretty interesting. The clip was played at about midnight where I live so I doubt it got any good recognition but every little bit helps right?

awehr - you are sooooo right.
My fave used to be MST3K.....

it's sad.

Max...that is interesting...probably would make a good article topic.

I never realized that G4 was a Comcast channel. I have Mediacom, and I have it on my digital package, along with TechTV. That G4 channel didn't look interesting to me, as all I ever saw was clips of games.

I do hate to see how TechTV will turn out now. I don't get much chances to watch it, since it's also on my digital-only package, and in the main room where my wife's attached to the TV.

Well, Comcast will probably fubar things up and run reality shows on it or something, like. eMTv is not a music channel anymore, so I wouldn't be suprised if tech tv becomes a soap opera channel (or whatever they think gets "ratings")

Some GOOD media news for ya folks...

You heard about the "liberal radio network" they are trying to launch? Well, word is, Chuck-D is slated to be one of the announcers. As if you didn't know, Mr. D is a strong ally of our issues.

How cool is THAT!

I work for Comcast HSI. Its ok, I don't mind all the Comcast bashing. But I for one don't think you are going to see a lot of changes, based of the info I got

DMX "basically does not like the record labels and the fact that he has to pay to express his ideas and then ask for permission to use them."

I saw that clip. He said he was going to make movies because the money was better. DMX is the man.

I hope there isn't much change I don't what I would do without X-Play. There aren't any multi-platform videogame magazines out there except for GamePro which is kind of expensive even with subscription.

Subject change: I think that they still run MST3K on SciFi on Saturday at 9am. Anybody remember waaaay back in 1993 when MST3K was on Comedy Central? Instead of Pearl they had those two guys and not much of the show outside of the movies made sense.

The good things in life will always be ruined by the stupid people until they are all forced to wear signs.
