Hatch Pushes for RIAA/MPAA Anti-Trust Exemption

" 'Market Realities'
Hatch pushes for RIAA antitrust exemption

Senator Orrin Hatch begins pushing legislation that would make the RIAA and MPAA exempt from anti-trust litigation. Hatch suggests the protection is needed due to certain "market realities". Buried within Hatch's EnForce (Enhancing Federal Obscenity Reporting and Copyright Enforcement Act of 2003) proposal lies protection for the RIAA and MPAA from anti-trust lawsuits like those recently filed by Webcasters (You can follow the long and ugly RIAA vs. Webcaster battle via our news archive). Hatch, who is a musician himself, was originally against the RIAA, but over time has for some reason (wink, wink: OpenSecrets.org) slowly become one of the film and music industry's most rabid supporters. The Register has additional detail.

With this week's anti-spam legislation primarily a boon to the marketing industry; and now this, has
a neon for-sale sign been placed on Congress?"

---Snip---

We can not let them get away with this! The RIAA/MPAA just want to make it where they have total control over the market. I believe it's time someone begins a campaign to push "Down The Hatch" out of office before the Country goes down the "Hatch."

I'm gonna email this story to as many anti-RIAA/MPAA supporters as possible. They cannot control everything we see and hear. this is ridiculos.

I hate that wretched spawn, Orrin Hatch. The RIAA/MPAA and anyone else for that matter should not be above the law. No matter how evil you are, you should play by the rules like everyone else.

There is no reason for anti-trust exemption. The protections are in place for a reason, which include market "realities". And simply saying market realities disctate it should not be enough. I don't blindly trust this person and if he wants to do something like this he had better give good reason.

you know seldom does public officials make me so sick that my stomach literally knotts up but this once does. I really feel sick and queasy and that's scary. Either He's in bed with the industry and knows full well what kind of monster he's unleashing or he's just too damn stupid and doesn't comprehend what he's doing.
since there are strong arguments for each view I'll leave that up to the reader to decide.

lemme get this right. Hatch wants to exempt an industry that is controlling limited distribution channels that wants to squash any competition? Excuse me but if one industry defines the word monopoly it is the entertainment industry. One can be sure if such an act happens other industries in general will be the ones to strike it back down. How narrow minded can those fools be??? OPPS... I forgot it has RIAA smell all over it

Everything on this... all new laws made by the RIAC and twisted so they keep immune, just reaks of a neo-nazi regime that's trying to gain total control over our country.

About Hatch's proposal: Can you say "arbitrary tyranny," anyone? This is just out of the old Soviet Union. So on the one hand you have him and Smith attempting to shove one big crypto-racist hate crime against digital consumers down this country's throat; on the other, you have this. In other words, adding insult to injury.

And I've said this before, I'll say it again: Not only DON'T they deserve this (or any) kind of special treatment, if they are as "non-profit" as they claim they should also HAVE THEIR TAX-EXEMPT STATUS REVOKED!

lawguy,

I have seen that website before, although I don't remember how I heard of it. Maybe Mr. Hatch is using the RIAA to get even with people who never bought his music :p (Joking)

Two things to say. First off, those titles should show us just how wacked our government is. The second thing is that if all of these new laws were passed and the RIAA and MPAA were no longer subject to anti-trust regulations they would be able to use tactics that remind me of the gestapo and at the same time reek of the IRS.

By the way, as a "catholic," I can tell you that Orrin-the-Infringer is attempting to profit off of the original "Peace is Flowing Like a River" title.

See, as a "catholic" I immediately recognize Orrin's title (Jesus' Love is Like a River) as a rip off of the aforementioned.

Orrin, you dirty fucking pirate.

I wonder if this was brought up because there was a fear of anti-trust lawsuit against the RIAA / MPAA.
