IS YOUR MACHINE GETTING PINGED WHEN YOU COME HERE?
Posted by AdminCodeWarrior in on March 26, 2004 at 5:47 PM

For some time, many of us have experienced getting "hammered" with pings from the RIAA, from BigChampagne,Vivendi, BayTSP, and others. We need some hard evidence on this issue, so, here's what we need.

Those of you with PeerGuardian, or Zone Alarm or other firewall that can track attemption intrustions or excessive "pinging" or port scans, that seem to start when you visit this site, or leave this site, or while you are here
(and by "this site" I mean DMusic.com, boycott-riaa.com, gnutella.com, or gnutellanews.com ) please keep a record of this.

You can do a ctrl + prt scrn (Control plus Print Screen) to capture the image of peerguardian's screen showing intrustions, and copy this to a paint or graphic program to document the interference, or you can copy the PeerGuardian list of IP address, time and date...etc..

As much as possible, try to keep track of this for a few days or so.

If you are not using P2P programs, all the better. We are trying to see if there is in fact a pattern and practice of these various entities trying to target our visitors , apparently, simply for visiting this site.

You can respond here, or send me an email at

scan_evidence(at)yahoo.com

We really want to find out one way or another what is going on, and the sooner you can start the better.

Please

In advance, thank you for your help.

hmmm... lately, my machine has been getting scanned/pinged by Vivendi Universal (according to PG), don't know if it's because I've been coming here though. I'll start watching it closer though.

You're not the only one who has reported this about the Vivendi.
We need to get evidence of these scans happening ...so please do a copy/paste of the PG intrusion attempt/scans and save as a txt file or copy/paste into a DMusic note to either me or leflaw.

I monitor my firewall logs very closely. I havn't found any strange activity in relations to this site. The only P2P I use is bittorrent and only for legal distributions. Please share the IP addresses in question with me and I will check my back logs. If you wish you can email them to me at

christopher_scerbo@umit.maine.edu

If they are doing this they would need to have access or some kind of connection to the web server. Have you checked your paypal logo, that does go to an outside site.

I'll definitely watch as closely as possible, and keep careful records. Thank goodness for PeerGuardian.

purfus...we are trying to determine if there is a correlation between these scans and people visiting this site. Thanks in advance. I hope to be getting some feedback from other folks here who have been talking about an increase in scans recently, and I hope to have some IP addresses to provide you with, to compare to your logs.

What they can do is find out the IP address of the site, and the port people use to connect to the board, and scan using a port scanner program.

I just installed pg yesterday after reading the your other article but I have no blocks on it ? but I'm not sure how to use it I do know that I get port scans about every min or so on zone alarm (but its not pro) I never noticed befor as I was on dial up and had no fire wall now I do and I don't no if its unusual or not I'll grab some screen shots of Zones log and pass them over.

medward...certainly, if there is evidence that they are trying to interfere with visitors or targetting this site or its users, we would then have to consider what legal options are open to us.

That's just me speaking at this point...however, leflaw is interested as well in whatever evidence there is of unusual activity being directed at our visitors.

I don't use any of p2p or PeerGaurdian software, but I do have a firewall capable of saving logs of port scans....If someone can point me in the direction of an IP address list of these bogus people, I'll see if I can compile a list of port scans.

I have 5 static addresses as well as a gateway address. The gateway handles all my traffic, so the statics are unused.

If I can't get anything useable through the router logs, I'll stick a small box on one of the unused statics, load it with PeerGaurdian and/or ZoneAlarm and let it roll for a while to see what it gathers.

They sure as hell better not try anything like that with me. I have turned Protowall on to see if this happens to me. I use BitTorrent for legal stuff like I've said before, so I'll know that if they sue me for anything, it's because they saw me using it. Nothing to do with specific files. It couldn't possibly happen, so they're absolutely sunk if they make a move...

I will try to start saving screenshots... mostly I have been getting hit by
ICANN today. (I hope I am reading Sygate right. It lists about 17 "hops" on the latest hit. #1 on the list is ICANN and #17 is Charter. I assume that since I am a Charter customer, the later the number, the later the machine it hopped from to get me.)

I am fairly clueless about this stuff, but will try to log it if it keeps up as bad as it has been the past couple weeks.

I didn't get hit when I was on earlier but later I was realy hit hard on other sites while looking at news and such. Between my dial up and Zone Alarm and PG. It's bad enough. I'd hate to see what it would be like on cable or DSL.

I have connection logs for PG going back to 10-19-03

I have 2 blocked intrusions logged that stick out.

1.Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment Inc.
2.NetPD

Did a little research on NetPD. A british company that is working for several media companies in the states. They use proprietary software used to gather evidence of music sharing.

For anyone out there looking for valid, hard evidence about this site and 3rd party scan attempts. There are a few things to do.

1. Remove all tracking/spyware on your system. This will eliminate unrelated scans.

2. Do not visit other sites or open duplicate browsers. Scan correlation will be invalid.

Airwolf1701, those are ads from the pages you view. If you get hit hard like that, 9 times out of 10 it's ads. For me, it's 100% of the time. And any other time I'm hit, it's just some poor sap who falls under IP addresses that are still in the list, yet no longer belng to those it's supposed to block...

Everyone should do themselves a big favour and download the Blocklist Manager, from the same place where you would get ProtoWall.

I got rid of ProtoWall, but kept the Blocklist Manager. As a result, I currently have nearly 11,000 IP range blocks on my PG list (after you convert the raw list to PG specs). I probably won't need most of them, but they're good to have, just in case.

Thanks for the information guys. I try and keep the PG and Zone Alarm up to date and I have Spybot Search and Destroy to get rid of anything else thats not stopped by the rest. IF there was anything that would help being on Dial up I'd like to hear about it.

I would use Protowall, as it does a fine job. However I was one that suffers from a very slow network when the Protowall driver is in use. Internet is fine, however. Protowall and Samba/Linux just doesn't cooperate very well.

As for PeerGuardian, I've actually recently got hit with FBI, BigChampagne, and RIAA. This just happened this morning while I was on the site. Unfortunatly, it did not log it as I'm having computer troubles. Next time it happens, I'll be sure to get a screen capture!

Independent;

IANA is the keeper of the keys for IP address allocation. They aren't know to be in the search and spy business.

About the reference you listed referencing the 10.0.0.0 range. it is one of three sets of address ranges that are not routed on the Internet. They are intended for use behind a firewall in private IP networks. This is why it tells you its reserved for special use.

On another note, ICANN has been know to chase hackers....I would be curious about being pinged by them.

If you are just using PG you are not getting any UDP blocks. ProtoWall will block the UDP. I am here as well to give this a test. I just checked and the 209.10.41.72 - Globix Trial Range Corporation Globix Trial RangeBLK3 is still in the list over at bluetack.co.uk. DA posted this in the news. Someone just came in with the NetRange: 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 problem I will mention this to him.

Tonight Protowall has been busy. While visiting dslreports, Globix said hello. I then wandered over to my ISP's site (Adelphia) to see if they posted any network issues (as if!) and found that loading their pages alerts the FBI (63.240.137.107). So, on I wander over here to catch up on the news and while reading this thread the FBI site hits me with 90 pings to ICMP/no destport. I'm not sure what ICMP has to with the FBI or why all 90 were sent in less than 5 secs.

Ok,

I never use P2P -- ever... so when I read this post I got curious and download peerguardian just to see what would happen...

The result...
Connection Rejected: 205.180.85.21 - media.fastclick.netATBP ATBP

Everytime I would click on a different article or even log in to post this note... Now Just to see what would happen I went over to Soundclick and had the same result -- then I went over to artistlaunch and had 0 pngs....

If I understand this right then it appears that they are monitoring this site alright and tracking everytime someone clicks on anything here -- at least that is what I find --- And its intersting about soundclick also having a problem but not artistlaunch.... makes one wonder why...

I use Sygate Pro and have heard Outpost is very good. ZoneAlarm Pro is popular as well. Sygate does a good job but it's filter rules are an issue; namely that it can't handle large blocklists in a single filter rule. You may get more responses if you take this question to the forums.

Hi CodeWarrior i heard there was a party over this way :) (Smile)

Peerguardian is useless to detect pings since it only detects TCP protocols , pings are ICMP , it wont even block or detect traceroutes [UDP], unless its been redesigned since i used it last. ???

Protowall covers all the protocols you need to worry about and will pick up on any pings since it blocks ICMP protocol , and hey Sygate and Outpost Firewalls are the sh!t if you really want to pick up on this activity ,as their intrusion detection loves this sort of thing, and will log it all.

the guy that just posted all those media fastclick ips is wasting page space , they ae ads , not anti-p2p connections.

the 10.0.0.0 connections are private address ranges , good luck tracking that down to anyone person on the planet.

ok im looking for the losers , but they arent scanning me yet :) (Smile).

great site , keep up the great work. :D (Big Grin)

hey guys :) (Smile) , heres a really simple solution for when you dont know what something is , just put it into a search engine and press search, i find google to be suitable for my needs , and this is what it says about them :

Fastclick is the leader in banner ad networks, join today. They feature CPM, CPC, Invue, Skyscraper, Interstitial, Super banners (728x90), and a great pop under program.

Fastclick is currently the leading program, and should be the first network you apply for. If accepted, you'll enjoy the support of a network that is in a league of its own. They offer 468x60, 728x90 sized CPM and CPC banners, Skyscraper banners, Invue ads (a new format of pop that slides onto the screen), Interstitial (ads that come between page views), and a great Pop Under program that pays the highest rates available from any network. Fastclick pays on time on the 20th of each month for the previous months earnings.

basically its ads and more ads, which i mentioned in my last post, absolutely nothing to do at alll in any way with the anti-p2p companies that CodeWarrior is trying to warn us about here.

and these mofos, good to see they ae blocked:

Connection Rejected: 64.14.61.68 - OP fake files PGIPDB (03-27-2004 @ 23:52:31)

these are fake file servers form cable & wireless network, ever heard of overpeer, they like to destroy p2p networks for a living , its very good they are being blocked.

anyone can go here to do their own whois searches , anytime you get strange hits like this , just go here , there are tons of whois servers on the net if you dont want to use this one, use google or come to bluetack forum for more help, thats what were here for.

http://www.samspade.org

network: Network-Name: 64.14.61.64
network: IP-Network: 64.14.61.64/27
network: Organization;I: Overpeer Inc
network: Name;I: Val Thomas
network: Email;I: vthomas@overpeer.com

there is a program called mp3sheild which uses regualrly updated filters to detect the fake music files put out by people like Overpeer, there are many more like them , so have a look at this site :
http://www.mp3shield.com/

"Morgenstern, president of Overpeer Inc., said his year-old, 15-employee company in New York fools would-be pirates some 300 million times a month by flooding file-sharing networks with decoys, mostly masquerading as popular songs." -The Boston Globe

With MP3 Shield you'll be able to purge your music collection from corrupted files, thus minimizing the spread of these corrupted files over the Net. In addition, you'll be able to detect when a file is corrupted before fully downloading it, thus allowing you to cancel corrupted downloads and save time, bandwidth, and your frustration ;-) (Wink)

hope that helps , remember to read as much information you can so you can protect yourself , we have research areas at bluetack if anyone wants to get more involved or just find out who else they have to worry about.

hope that helps you guys , and please try not to freak out when peerguardian just blocks ads , save it for the real bad guys.

Moore is right about the doubleclick and fastclick...what happens is , if you have other pages open that have things like AOL ads, doubleclick, etc...or popup windows...you do get some cross pollution that reflects interactivity not related to our site.

Excellent input Moore, and yes, media defender, baytsp, pd, and the rest are anti-P2P scans...

as a side note Moore...the Microsoft Corp trackers ...is the first I've seen...

Back to the point though, the purpose for this thread is to find out, if these companies, BayTSP, RIAA, BigChampagne, Mediadefender, etc., are targetting people visiting any of our four main sites, for scanning or any other form of surveillance and interference.

I defer to leflaw on the legal aspects, but in general, occasional pings are not illegal, nor are port scans. For example, the techies in the audience know that in setting up networks, it's not unusual to ping a site just to see if you network is working, or for other reasons...but,
hitting your machine over and over from sites like Vivendi, BayTSP, BigChampagne, RIAA, IFPI, etc., when you come to this site, may not be acceptable nor reasonable, and may constitute some sort of improper interference. Again, not being an attorney, I cannot offer specific legal advice. But, we do appreciate all info , such as these scan records, especially if the are done when you do not have other sites open, and are not running a P2P program. For example, when PG is quiet for hourse, and I come to dmusic to edit an ariticle, and get slammed by the RIAA, BigChampagne, etc., and I have no P2P software running, no ftp incidents going..nothing but just coming here...that shows they are targetting my machine for no reason, especially when all my ports are stealthed and I am behind a router.

yeah that really sucks Code.

hey are the scan reports posted by PF420 just from browsing the net , or from downloading on p2p netoworks at the same time , i wasnt sure ?

the microsoft trackers ip ranges are just for general protection , the connections can always be from activity like windows update , msn messenger or hotmail , and if you dont use any of these and get a hit then you know they are looking at you.

we like to have things covered just in case , and not everyone uses the m$ services i mentioned.

hope that helps :) (Smile)

lets see more of these logs and get this sorted , but please dont everybody post their full logs :) (Smile) , one example of each scan would be enough, just so we can see which IP range is being used , maybe put a x10 next to it to display the amounts of hits , ok just a thought. :) (Smile)

If I'm correct, I'm getting "pinged" or whatever the hell that means like every two seconds? What the hell is Globix anyway and how do I get them to fuck off?

I haven't gotten Vivendi in a loooong time. I came to this website yesterday i think, and during the night, I got 7 entries on PG. Maybe they ping visitors to the website at a later time

Private addresses... I am glad I dont have a large company... or what I would think as an emloyee attack would be hand-crafted packets (corrupted SYN packets, as in spoofed IPs.) from the RIAA! I am wondering if they aren't trying to DoS us, for visiting an anti-RIAA site. Relates to a palladium filter which restricts certain sites... BTW, should I block private addresses from P2P apps 'cause of this? (Woldn't be surprised if they themselves got hacked, and the RIAA machines are zombies for real h4x0rz!!)
