RIAA To Crack Down On "Car Radio Piracy"
Posted by AdvancedTheSherminator in on March 16, 2004 at 12:39 AM

The Recording Industry Association of America announced today it would be expanding its crackdown on copyright infringement by suing family members, hitchhikers and carpoolers.

Lawyers for the RIAA maintain that the radio in each car was never meant to be listened to by anyone else except the original owner of the vehicle.

Therefore, any additional passengers who listen to music on the radio in another individual\'s car are doing so illegally and without the express permission of the copyright holders of the respective songs that are broadcast.

RIAA attorneys were preparing to go to Federal District courts across the country to have subpoenas issued to every car maker in America in the hopes of forcing them to disclose the names and addresses of all purchasers from the last 20 years.

\"We think this is a no brainer,\" said an RIAA spokesperson who declined to be identified. \"These drivers have been illegally sharing music on their radios and their passengers have been getting a free ride for way too long,\" he continued.

Legal representatives for the RIAA also warned that they would especially be targeting the \"big fish\" like charter bus drivers and RV owners who blatantly turn up the radio volume allowing others to hear.

In addition, RIAA lawyers said they were hoping to get a court order to exhume the bodies of Scottish physicist James Clerk-Maxwell, who developed the theory of electromagnetic waves and Guglielmo Marconi, who discovered and harnessed wireless radio in order to sue both corpses for unfair business practices.

They have gone too far ...I think i will go to washington and turn up my radio real loud as I drive by their offices...Then I will wait for the subpoena....bunch of dumbasses!

I saw this on a news site earlier. The same article went on to say that:

"...any and all persons who purchase, sell or otherwise allow use of a used vehicle with a radio will come under the same scrutiny and face legal action."

Alamo Car Rental and other car rental agencies have gone on record saying: "We will not stand idly by and let this kind of fascist recklessness go unchallenged, especially since we just got all of our new upscale rentals with satellite radio delivered!"

deletethispost,

Couldn't they technically sue the pope for Catholic Christmas hymns? Aside from the fact that he sings them hisself, so does every church that he's in charge of.

This has to be a joke. The court will not allow the RIAA to sue people for listening to music in someone else's car. That is just stupid. This is what will happen next.

Lawyer: I represent the RIAA. We're suing you for singing a copyrighted tune. You have no choice but settle or we will kick your butt in court.

Guy: GET THE (bleep) OUT OF MY BATHROOM! I'M TRYING TO TAKE A SHOWER HERE!

I would love to be in that courtroom to see the judge walk over to the RIAA attorneys and start beating him with that little wooden hammer that have for waisting the courts time.

As for the Finnland taxi's. If I had a shop that I was advertising on the radio, I would be really upset if all the taxi's had to turn off their radio.

If I was the taxi driver and had to pay to play the radio, then if one of my customers heard an advertisment for a hotel/diner/ect.. and went to the place, then some advertising dollars should be going back into my pocket. Yeah, bet that will happen.

I wrote a story about this once. In that not so distant future I envisioned, everyone within hearing distance of a recorded sound had to submit financial information in order for the song to be heard on any type of device. Of course, if even one refused, then the song wouldn't be played on that device.

Let's just hope this never comes to pass.

Funny! But you should have included the nitwits who bump their music to everyone in a 2 block radius. Couldn't that be considered copyright infringement since they're effectively broadcasting the music without paying the vig to the RIAA? ;-) (Wink)
