After 30 years in exile, Dick and Jane, the plucky pair that taught two generations of American children to read, are back in print. (Related story: 2.5 million reissued books sold)
Publishing giant Pearson, which acquired the rights to the original Dick and Jane books when it bought publisher Scott Foresman in 1996, is parlaying millions of Americans' warm memories of first grade into hefty sales - 2.5 million books in under a year and a half, not to mention a raft of other merchandise in the works, from calendars and coloring books to clothing.
But the return of Dick and Jane is for nostalgia's sake only. The books are not for classroom use, the publisher says.
That's probably just as well, because since the 1950s, parents, researchers and even teachers have blamed the series for many Americans' poor reading skills.

Out of print for 30 years but still under copyright which was transferred to another party. Copyright should not be transferable; originating author only, even if the author is a corporation under work-for-hire (If some company commissions a jingle, they DO deserve the copyrights. Work-for-hire should NEVER apply to an album from an artist.)

See Dick. See Dick watch PBS programming. See Dick learning. See Jane. See Jane grow up on Sesame Street. See Dick and Jane learn.
See Dick and Jane get free books through the "Reading is Fundamental" program. Look, Dick and Jane have the highest literacy and retention rates in decades.
See George. See George gut education spending. See Dick and Jane's kids turn into illiterate lumps of stupidity. See lumps, see lumps pump out completely incomprehensible lines of gibberish. "Wut r u tyrng 2 say?"
