The Government should act immediately to ensure that Irish Consumers can benefit from savings made on the internet, according to Fine Gael’s Youth Affairs Spokesman, Damien English.
Deputy English made his comments following last month’s agreement between CD-WOW, the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) and the British Phonographic Industry Ltd (BPI), which forced the internet retailer to impose a €3 surcharge on their Irish customers.
“As far as Fine Gael is concerned, buying a CD online is a matter for the consumer and the consumer alone. It is unfortunate that IRMA and the BPI decided to take this action against CD-WOW and deprive Irish music lovers of real choice.
“Irish Consumers are the victims of yet another rip off that the Government refuses to tackle. Judging by the number of complaints to Fine Gael’s consumer website, www.ripoff.ie, young people are furious that they are once again paying more than those living in Europe and elsewhere.
“International postal agreements clearly state that once a package is dispatched, it belongs solely to the person to whom it is addressed. The Government should introduce legislation that makes it clear that personal imports of this kind are permissible.
“Fine Gael has made it clear it is on the consumer’s side against Rip-Off Ireland. Perhaps the Government should make it clear where it stands.”
