CBS Censors Look to the Grammys
Posted by RockGeorge D. Ziemann in on February 4, 2004 at 9:32 PM

For the first time in the 46-year history of the Grammys, CBS will be able to delete inappropriate video as well as audio when it hosts the awards show this Sunday.

"CBS announced it will broadcast the Grammys using an "enhanced" tape delay system," says CNN, adding that neither Janet Jackson nor either of her breasts will be appearing on the show, as least not as a presenter.

Which brings us to wonder what exactly is "inappropriate video"? Britney Spears is inappropriate, period. So is war footage, suicide bomber attacks, and the moment of birth. But for CBS, the line will apparently be drawn somewhere between the Britney/Madonna kiss and JJ's pectoral appendage.

Those CBS censors have been known to be a nit-picking bunch. At least in the past. Just ask the Smothers Brothers.

As for the show itself, it's all about the RIAA giving awards to its slaves for producing commercial success. Recording Arts and Sciences? Forget it. The RIAA is so technically incompetent that Kazaa deserves the Grammy for innovation. I bet they don't get it, though.

And the art of music? You won't find that at an RIAA label any time soon. It's all about the money. Art? Science? Sorry, but it's the music "business". The only art being considered is the art of separating the artists and the fans from their money.

For my money, CBS doesn't have to censor the Grammys. We won't be seeing it in my house anyway.

It's pretty sad when you can't even trust your own peformers to behave decently. I just want to say here a big thank you to George, Independentmusician, undeath, Tom and all you indie musicians who frequent this site. because of this site and your input I'm getting to know Indie music much better and that there are much better alternitives

This better alternatives is what this is about and what the RIAA would desperately like to kill off. The idea that you can listen to music, not of their control. It has long been their stance you the listener will buy what you like to hear.

If they are not included in that picture of music you love to hear, guess what happens to their income? Seems to me I have been hearing them moan of something to that effect of losing income...

CBS won't have to take a survey of what I am watching in my household, you can bet the Grammys won't be among those I do watch. What they favor and what I favor just never totals up to be the same things.

It is both hands patting the back. Since I don't like the guy between those hands, it isn't of much interest to me.

Hey why don't we censor all this Riaa filth and give the awards to real artist who are writing great music like Death Cab For Cutie, Fugazi, Gomez, and Sleater-Kinney. Wet1 you are so right that there's better alternatives and we are so lucky to be in on it. There's a revolution under the main stream and the BigPigMedia and the Cowardly Riaa are doing their best to limit our choices.. Sorry Sherman you and your communist filth will not stop the second coming of IndieRock. Sign me up for the Boycott!!!

The Slut/Geezer kiss should've been censored too. I'm against all this sex and am actually happy to see this.

Remember when the RIAA was saying about porn being downloaded on peer to peer? They show more pornish crap on MTV than people probably download! RIAA is two-faced garbage sellers! The first thing my husband asked when I told him what happened at half-time, (he was sleeping) is if she had a new CD coming out soon. I told him yes and that she also had a TV movie coming on soon also. The Music Industry has to really do stupid crap to try to move their music these days.. hopefully the FCC will get the actual culprits!

All you people love to jump to these conclusions. Did it ever occur to you that maybe crabs is running rampant in the hip hop community? I'd like to see you not scratch. haha. I'm sure it will still be "approrpriate" regardless of the reason for the nut-grabbage.

Bet they wish they had Winston from "1984" to do the editing for them on the tape delay machine....
"For my money, CBS doesn't have to censor the Grammys. We won't be seeing it in my house anyway."

That speaks for me as well....But heck, I can't remember the last time I saw any part of that nonsense...I just get upset that people so inarticulate make so much money,....

This is nothing new. Reality TV shows use this technique all the time on live feeds. Here in the UK at present there is a show called 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me outta Here'. They censor stuff on video and audio (They can do both or independently of one another) on a delayed live feed from Australia.

It's really annoying to be honest. The censoring also ;) (Wink)

So, what are the poor CBS affiliates supposed to do with 2-3 hours of black screen interspersed with commercials?

I think that there is an important distinction that should be made between "major label music" and "RIAA music." The RIAA is only a special interest group, which is composed of both big and smaller labels. Symphony X, for example, is an absolutely phenomenal band that just happens to be signed to Metal Blade, a member of the RIAA. However, you'll never see Symphony X win a Grammy, or catch anything of theirs on MTV or the radio. My point? The major labels are the REAL enemy here; they are the ones who have bastardized the art of music by turning it into a soulless, manufactured commodity and continually flood the market with meaningless tripe. The major labels are the ones behind the RIAA's lawsuits against file-sharers (I know for a fact that Metal Blade gives out free, full-length, 128kps MP3s of songs for almost all of their current releases. Yes, you heard me: a member of the RIAA).
