Serves them right, they were warned not to take on the Linux community.

While usually worms and viruses are harmful, and just designed to screw over everyone's lives, I applaud the creator, although he is using a "destructive" method, his intent and purpose is justifiable and noble. Denial-of-service right on MyDoom :) (Smile)

The creator's intent is not justifiable, and is most definately not noble.

What has this creator done? He has duped non-tech savvy people into openning his software, and sending out multiple e-mails to their entire address lists filling up other's e-mail quotas, phone lines downloading the e-mails, and a lot of the user's bandwidth both incoming & outgoing; and using up resources on the individual machines of the users.

Tell me how that is justifiable & noble?

No matter what anything may think about SCO, this is NOT the way to handle it, there is a proper judicial system in place for a reason, they will decide the outcome of the SCO / Linux issues; and no virus or DOS attack is going to change any of that.

I hope they track down the creator of this virus and prosecute him severely.

"there is a proper judicial system in place for a reason"

Unfortunately, the reason is to make it take years to stop ridiculous behavior on the part of corporations.

true but I can still admire them for their selectiveness and cunning. much like a general admires an oposing army or a police officer can admire the creativity of certin criminals. after all who else got hurt?

It's not noble by any means, but it's definitely justifiable. There is not a proper judicial system in place. Linux customers were going to be sued by SCO for using linux. How is it justifiable to wait for the courts to screw it up? Fuck the court system. It's a joke, especially concerning copyright law. No disrespect intended.

I'm don't think its noble - Synonyms -- Honorable; worthy; dignified; elevated; exalted; superior; sublime; great; eminent; illustrious; renowned; stately; splendid; magnificent; grand; magnanimous; generous; liberal; free.

Anarchy is not noble. Justifiable perhaps like a mass demonstration, but we all have to abide by the law of the land, if the law is unjust then we have to seek to change it lawfully. As an er..um... intelligent species we need rules in order to progress.

viruses - Like an itch you can't scratch, bloody annoying.

Pissing off Linux users is pretty damn stupid. The Linux community is into computers way more than the average "e-mail and surf" user and is more likely to know how to fight fire with fire. Linux geeks are very passionate about their O.S. unlike most windows users. I'm happy to see SCO start to reap what they've sown.

"As an er..um... intelligent species we need rules in order to progress."

Yes we do. The "rules" are certainly in place. Unfortunately, reality and the law do not reflect these rules, so we just go over, under around or right through them in order to effect change.

Here's a rule -- Pissing off Linux users is pretty damn stupid. We can call this Zuckuss' Rule.

It comes right after Rule No. 1 -- Support file sharing or die.

Not "noble" but I think its justifiable revenge on to take on this SCO company.

"Proper" judicial systems are usually just kangaroo courts. Sometimes people have to take matters into their own hands when the courts of the land do not do justice.

anarchy and chaos are the mother and father to government and order...in the same way that a ripe apple is the mother of a rotten one.

Anarchy is not mob rule...an-archy, quite literally, is NO government.
Mob rule, technically, is ochlarchy.

Most of the real horror and terror and evil that has been inflicted on mankind, has been inflicted by governments and organized religion, and in fact, if one takes a close look at history, one can find almost a complete, positive, one to one relationship between the level of organization and bureaucracy maintained by a government or religion, and the horror it inflicts on those who come under its influence.

If anyone examines the Nazi regime closely, you'll find a high level of organization, order, and attention to detail. They used this machine to inflict horror and death on millions of innocents. Similarly, if we examine the organized religions with the most bureaucracy and organization, we find systematic events of torture and exploitation of the poor and the innocent.

Let's look at the Maya, the Aztecs, the Toltecs...as natives became more and more tied up with organization, law making, and bureaucracy, the more evil the government became.

In Rome, as government became more layered, systematized, more structured, the blood lust, the general thirst for blood of the people in the Empire also increased, as did the decadence.

History shows us quite clearly that the more a group evolves into a very organized, systematized, highly bureaucratic structure...the more they feel like they are threatened by the barbarians, the unbelievers, those who are "less than human"....the more inhuman that government , that country becomes.

The Romans kept their populace dulled by feeding them "bread and circuses"...today, we have the Super Bowl, which ironically was posted on the screen as being between the Boston PATRIOTS and the Panthers...the latter being depicted by this dark head....they may as well have depicted the Panthers as having a patch on one eye, a scar, and wearing a black hat to make the morality play complete....

In the human body, neural organization is best performed in a chaotic fashion.

In fact, when brain waves become synchronized, we find a person having an epileptic seizure...

Now, do I think writing a virus that exploits legions of home users boxes to attack a website is noble? No, not noble. But SCO's actions are not noble either...the abuse of copyright laws is not noble. In this world, I find that the most noble things are usually those things that DON'T make the headlines.

I find it noble for a man and woman to sacrifice so that their child can have a better life than they did. I find it noble that men and women are willing to give their lives for you and me.

Sadly, though the word "noble" is associated with nobility and royalty, I find very little "noble" about most of the former regents, kings, and queens of this world. We have the term noblesse oblige, which basically means that people of noble lineage, should act as a role model for the peasants. Even this idea is so full of condescension it makes me want to puke.

I have said in another thread, that law is like a dung beetle, flailing about in the feces, trying to decide which bit to digest first.

While the attack on SCO is not "noble"...it does seem like social karma...you screw with the public, they screw with you....

You sue the consumer for downloaded tunes...you get boycotted...

I totally agree. I am against all kinds of viruses and I don't applaud tricking people and using their computers to target companies like SCO and Microsoft. Some company or corporation is always going to be dominate somewhere, and there's always going to be people grumbling about it.

The solution is for open source to continue developing and balance out the closed source. You don't believe it will happen? I do. Linux is open and free. Instead of having a campus of people to work on it, you have the world.

Personally, I find nothing wrong with Microsoft or SCO. I think their attitudes aren't that great, but they aren't any worse than other US corporations. I believe in open source and I'm not going to bother insulting closed source and ridiculing or attacking it. Nothing is perfect.

Our judicial system is the best in the world. It's better than anything else. Yes, it can be better. But it's impossible to be perfect. You can't always have a negative frame of reference. That court ruling in December? Nothing negative about that, you'll have to admit. A victory for us.

The RIAA is a bunch of corporate bigwigs atop a dissatisfied group of employees- a shaky structure. It's only a matter of time before the tower collapses and Sherman, Bainwol, and Williams come crashing down.

I personally am quite incensed at Microsoft, SCO, and whoever is distributing MYDOOM for the same reason...my box is my box...it is not open season for M$ to shut down because I don'ta activate, it is not just a tool for these virus writers to use as a zombie box to attack SCO..screw SCO, screw the MYDOOM writers, screw virus writers in general, screw email scammers/spammers...and yes, screw Microsoft, the MPAA, the BSA, and the RIAA, and the NSA....and anyone else who wants to exploit my computing resources and wants to violate my right to privacy.

I say to all these a-holes, it's time to leave the public the hell alone~!

You want to do a DDOS attack? Buy a million servers and do it using your own friggin' domain...

Sure, I keep a hardware firewall, software firewall, two anti-virus progs going...but I get sick of my AV program having to intercept viruses....

Most people who really get hurt by viruses are poor people who friggin' don't know any better. You get some poor old lady who thinks she has email pictures of her grandkid and opens an attachment and gets her hard drive wiped or some other crappy thing...
how does that hurt the REAL target of most virus writers? Nada...

My message is clear for all the a-holes out there...the public is TIRED of you screwing with our machines, our lives, our privacy....

LEAVE US THE F ALONE!

For those of you who are getting their jollies over this --0 I think that is totally absurd.... There is probably a good chance that Dmusic (if not already) will get hit as well since a lot of music-related sites are getting hit -- Soundclick has been up and down and artistlaunch is having to resurface its drives.... Plus, we have been getting bombarded by personal emails containing the virus from so-called people from dmusic.com -- like Derek@dmusic.com and sally@dmusic.com --- these are random selections from someone's computer who had some type of correspondance from here -- the virus harvests e-mail extensions and then randomly changes the sender's name and places innocent message lines on the into.... like "hello" .... We retreive our messages from a unix server but some people who have "pop" accounts are finding that when they automatically "pop" their mail in to their home or work computer that the activity automatically opens some e-mails and triggers the .exe file... others are disguesed with a .jpg file that then has several likes of spaces witht the real .exe or .com file on the end that you don't see....

This is a serious problem and is affecting innocent people and innccent sites...Unless you have had the luxury of having to total reformat your own hard drive after a viral infection and lose everything you had to own, re-install all your software and remember all the software keys you might have had then yo won't truly appreciate this situation...

If the internet is tied up with gargage like this then so is this lsite and along with it your opportunity to upload and or download music or share your music if you are an artist...

I can't be objective here. I'd really like to beat the crap out of some of these virus writers but I really hate SCO. my question is, "If two wrongs don't make a right, then how many wrongs does it take?"

The guy who wrote this would be an extremists. He believes his actions are justified as they are attacking the enemy, but this only makes your cause look bad.

He was wrong to write this virus to attack SCO, and at the same time cause plenty of people hell, whom I do feel sorry for, but that doesn't mean we have to feel sorry for SCO.

I actually had to put "three rights make a left" to use a few months ago when there was road work going on and I couldn't make a left turn, so I made three rights.

I read today (and sorry if someone already mentioned it), that the mydoom virus will attack microsoft.com on 14th February and that Denial of Service attacks will cease hitting the SCO servers on 12th February, my guess is that some people are already putting the PC clocks foward. Microsoft however say they are prepared, also this is currently the second most verulent virus so far.

Oh I forgot to mention that microsoft have put up a $250,000 reward for the capture of the virus author, of course a more serious virus is the one now killing people "chicken flu".

Code, George, you got a lot of LARGE prime left.. Nodding you ain't past nothin'! You guys are just more "seasoned"..;) (Wink) thanks for your wonderful, expressive post, Code.. and I agree.. no justice, no peace. To be truly free means doing your homework for self-protection.. because garbage floats out there with the gold..
